I understand there are some things a resort simply cannot change, and some that can be. The L’Auberge Del Mar is definitely marketing their resort on location. I did read the trip reports about the train noise (about two blocks from the resort), street noise directly in front of the resort, and lobby noise (parties, receptions). Unfortunately all were accurate. However because of the trip adviser posts I requested a third floor room, not on the street side and was pleased they accommodated both my room location request as well as early check in. Oh, and remember, like most places this is a “request only”. I had a Premier Deluxe King Bed room (which is located on both the 2nd & 3rd floors). I do give the staff excellent marks on service from the front desk to the valets, everyone was extremely accommodating. I did occasionally hear the train noise but I did not find it disruptive, however the lobby noise on Saturday was horrible.
The room had a very comfortable pillow top bed, wonderful pillows and bedding and was well appointed, but small, very small. There was a tiny baloney over looking diners below you, a tiny bathroom, no bathtub, and very limited bathroom storage. When you opened the shower door it covered three quarters of the single vanity that had about ten inches on each side of the single sink to store items. No shelves in the bathroom to store anything unless you count the space below the sink. Also, no night light in the bathroom, such a small inexpensive item that makes a difference too many guests. There were about 6 hangers in the closet, and only two drawers to store clothing; the bottom drawer was actually broken. When you opened it, you could not totally close it. L’Auberge can’t be faulted on small room size, or the location (train tracks), it is what it is.
As a trip advisor reviewer I want people to know you will not have privacy on your baloney, and the rooms are small. Something’s L’Auberge can change is not packing the room refrigerators to the maximum with their overpriced items to sell where a guest cannot even squeeze in a bottle of wine or leftover meal. I heard resorts were getting away from the honor bars, apparently not at the L’Auberge. Also, they can change their depressing gym. It is in the basement, no fans, no windows, no disinfectant spray for equipment, no head phones for the Television monitors. There was a “tank” of water in the corner with paper cone cups…..come on, perhaps some bottled water? How about at least a few floor fans? I expected more from a resort that I paid $480 per night when including the mandatory $14 daily resort fee and $25 valet parking. I have the pleasure to stay at many lovely resorts for both personal and business travel, and feel this L’Auberge is basically over priced for what is offered.
Room Tip: Third Floor Room, NOT on the street side.
