****Bottom line review:
We've stayed at this Comfort Inn 3x total, and the front desk staff and crew are very nice, accommodating and friendly. Two weeks ago, we drove up on Saturday morning and decided it wouldn't hurt to ask if we could check in early--they let us check in at 10 am and were very friendly about it, going out of their way to make us happy. They have the typical free breakfast in the morning (cereal, pastries, MAKE-YOUR-OWN WAFFLES!!!, and alas, crappy coffee) and on our last stay, they had sausage patties and scrambled eggs too that weren't too bad.
There is a decent sized pool and jacuzzi spa, but we've never used either since most of our time in that area is spent near the beach at Newport.
It's definitely a decent place to stay if you're on a budget or want to save your money for other things (like renting bikes or parking meters...). They do honor the AAA discount.
No restaurant or kids' activities. Just your typical, nice, soft on the budget Comfort Inn.
****If you want to read on, here's my story:
We first stayed here back in June of '08 when my husband and I decided to be spontaneous and drive "north" from San Diego, and have a weekend adventure one Friday night. We stopped in San Juan Capistrano, and as beautiful as it is there, we decided we needed a little more "excitement" (like riding bikes or eating unhealthy fair food, haha), so we got back on the 405 and ended up on the 55 South. Neither of us had ever been to Newport Beach or that area, so we drove down to the peninsula to see what the scoop was and decided it would be fun to rent bikes on Saturday. We had no clue where we were (no smart phones or nav devices on that trip), so we stopped at every hotel that looked safe to check out rates. We played a little game of setting a budget and found this gem at under the price we set. It was humble but clean and we felt safe, and it is easily accessible from the 55 freeway (it's very close to the OC Fairgrounds).
That night we walked to a strip mall a block or two away and found a semi-fancy Italian restaurant, good food, but I can't remember the name for the life of me (I swore that I saw Hugh Laurie sitting across from our table though! haha). We had such a great time on that little spontaneous trip that Newport Beach was forever burned in our memories as the place we would go to just "get out of SD" for a weekend to rest and enjoy the beach! (I know,.. why do that when SD has some GREAT beaches?... I guess sometimes you just need to be away from your town to decompress..) This Comfort Inn is a short drive from the heart of NB and it is the first place I check out when we plan to go up there.
Room Tip: We've always requested a king size bed and end up with a room on the quieter side (vs. the parki...
