The main core of the hotel resides within the Spreckles mansion built in 1911. It is directly across the street from the Hotel Del Coronado. Post Victorian period rooms in the mansion can be had for $300+ per night. This structure is beautiful and very well maintained. The landscaping is also beautiful but a bit sparse because it is tucked between the many rooms & buildings on the property. Other available rooms are on the multi acre site are from single bed to suites. Four of the rooms I toured plus the one that I chose ($200 per night) were very clean, well lit, & in very good condition. I refrain from using the term excellent for the rooms because the first room had a malfunctioning heater. This necessitated a move to a second room. Three staff members assisted in this move. They made very short work of what could have been a true drudgery. Both rooms had minor flaws. The first was the heater, the second had a broken holder for the hand held shower head. In the future, management may want to do a room by room inspection to address these types of issues. I found all staff members that I encountered to be very cheerful, outgoing, and always willing to help. There was a spartan continental breakfast included in the stay. Very little protien (hard boiled eggs) but plenty of cereals, yogurt, fresh fruit, fruit juices, milk, tea, pastries, bread, and excellent coffee. Breakfast can be taken, poolside, in the music room, or in the lobby (part of the old sun porch) or on the veranda. The veranda directly faces the bay. The view can be stunning in the early morning as the sun is rising. The pool is a bit small. But, there is a hot tub. The beach can be accessed by walking across the street past the Del Coronado. I have been to San Diego six times in the past year. I found the Glorietta Bay Inn to be the best bargain value at the price in comparison to all of the othe places that I have previously stayed. There are two more trips planned there for me this year. I will most definitely return to this hotel.
