“LOVE this hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

This was the second time we stayed at this hotel. Had a lovely suite this time and the pent house about 3 years ago. Rooms were lovely, clean and beautifully decorated. I love the location for its easy access to everything in Coranado as well as a quick ride or ferry to San Diego. The continental breakfast is very nice whether you enjoy it in your room or on the terrace or in a lovely enclosed porch or room. The staff is very nice and most accommodating. As for the parking fee, most cities where parking is at a minimum they charge a parking fee. I do not like it but understand why they have it. Oh yes....the towels are large, soft, and abundant, a feature that I happen to love.

Room Tip: I love being in the main building and have no interest in being anywhere else. Might cost more, but...

“Great Location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

My husband and I selected the Sugar Baron Suite for its Bay View. The view is beautiful, especially at night, but unfortunately, it also includes a view of the neighboring rooftop, air conditioners and all. The living space was lovely but the bed was a bit soft for our taste. As we are early risers and enjoy a hot breakfast vs. a continental breakfast we did not take advantage of this offering. The location is ideal, walking distance to the beach and only about eight miles from downtown San Diego. We were aware of the $10/per day parking but were a bit put off by the fact that they charged for local calls to make our own dinner reservations - tacky. Some upgrades to the bathroom would be advisable. Flushing the toilet was followed by a massive gurgling sound from the sink area, thus you do not flush at night in consideration of other guests. There was also a continuous droning sound within the bathroom, fortunately closing the door eliminated the noise. These issues should be addressed by the maintenance staff. Being native Californians and having enjoyed many beautiful ocean view facilities, this site did not meet our expectations.

“Great location, good value!”

Spent one night here in late January. Good rate ($160 with taxes), great location across the street from the Del. I followed the advice of other posters and parked for free on the street rather than paying $10 to park in their lot, but I could easily see how free parking might be difficult to find in the summer. The free continental breakfast was tasty - yogurt, fruit, cereal, pastries. The sheets were very soft which is rare to find in a hotel of this level. My room on the ground floor was a bit noisy, but I just turned on the AC unit fan. I would definitely stay here again.

“Charming boutique hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 January 2012

I stayed here for two nights while on a business trip. It's only about 15 minutes from downtown San Diego. Rooms were very clean and comfortable. Basic continental breakfast was included. My only complaints were that they charged for parking (a pet peeve of mine - do they think I am getting to their hotel on a bicycle? ) - and my room was close to Orange Avenue and there was noticeable traffic noise at night. Ask for a room away from the street.

“Reasonable Price for an Upscale Gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 January 2012

The main core of the hotel resides within the Spreckles mansion built in 1911. It is directly across the street from the Hotel Del Coronado. Post Victorian period rooms in the mansion can be had for $300+ per night. This structure is beautiful and very well maintained. The landscaping is also beautiful but a bit sparse because it is tucked between the many rooms & buildings on the property. Other available rooms are on the multi acre site are from single bed to suites. Four of the rooms I toured plus the one that I chose ($200 per night) were very clean, well lit, & in very good condition. I refrain from using the term excellent for the rooms because the first room had a malfunctioning heater. This necessitated a move to a second room. Three staff members assisted in this move. They made very short work of what could have been a true drudgery. Both rooms had minor flaws. The first was the heater, the second had a broken holder for the hand held shower head. In the future, management may want to do a room by room inspection to address these types of issues. I found all staff members that I encountered to be very cheerful, outgoing, and always willing to help. There was a spartan continental breakfast included in the stay. Very little protien (hard boiled eggs) but plenty of cereals, yogurt, fresh fruit, fruit juices, milk, tea, pastries, bread, and excellent coffee. Breakfast can be taken, poolside, in the music room, or in the lobby (part of the old sun porch) or on the veranda. The veranda directly faces the bay. The view can be stunning in the early morning as the sun is rising. The pool is a bit small. But, there is a hot tub. The beach can be accessed by walking across the street past the Del Coronado. I have been to San Diego six times in the past year. I found the Glorietta Bay Inn to be the best bargain value at the price in comparison to all of the othe places that I have previously stayed. There are two more trips planned there for me this year. I will most definitely return to this hotel.

Room Tip: Take a walk along the beach walk or rent a bicycle. Then, come back through the main shopping distri...
