“Love the small and comfort hospitality”

I am a military wife. I travel a lot to see my husband in the area from LA county. This hotel is a great hotel for a quick getaway. The price is great for the hotel in the area. I had stayed in other hotels in the area that cost way more. (ex Ramada $119 per night) Valley Inn is 5 minutes walk to the beach and along Orange Ave. Best deal is to pay in Cash $87 per night, other $92 per night using cards (Ask the counter attendant).

“Great location... but...???”

We recently spent 4 nights at this Inn. We started to leave after our first night but decided to stay mainly because of the beautiful, scenic and convenient location. Also, we had difficulty finding a place in the same area at short notice. So, we decided to stay. This place has the potential to become a real jewel for travelers looking for old-world “inn” atmosphere and charm. Unfortunately, this inn does not deliver when it comes to the comfort and cleanliness for its guests. The place has issues. For one, it has a rodent problem in the kitchen area. I personally witness this on multiple occasions. This was brought to the staff’s attention. They seemed shocked but there was much evidence this has been an ongoing issue for some time. At no point during our checkout did management apologize for what we had experienced. The carpet throughout the inn was filthy and smelly. I could go on and on… but… When I inquired about the owner I was told that the owner rarely comes around. Someone with the right vision and resources could turn this into a true jewel that Coronado Island would really be proud of. Would we stay there again… absolutely not, unless there is a complete renovation, new vision and new management.

“Horrid dump”

Horrid hotel - barely above a flophouse. The bedspreads and rug were ancient and threadbare, the beds were so uncomfortable we slept on the floor on our beach blanket and the furniture wasn't fit for Goodwill. The bathroom was smaller and dirtier than an airplane's. Couldn't find a hotel manager to save your life. We cut our vacation short to get out of the hotel. Given the great location - near the beach and shops - it is absolutely criminal how poorly the owners take care of this Inn. Stay anywhere but here.

“Can't find a better location for the price!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 August 2006

This was our (my wife and I) first trip to San Diego and I booked the Village Inn because of the price and location. What I found is that all the reviews are correct. The place is old, the carpet is lacking, our bathroom was small, and there was dust on our ceiling fan, BUT the neighborhood and proximity to the beach and public transit are all outstanding.

I was attending the annual ESRI GIS conference and chose this place instead of other more expensive hotels in downtown San Diego and other unsafe hotels in National City (where a few friends stayed and couldn’t go out at night because of the neighborhood) that cost about the same. I used the public transit which was only a half block away to get to the downtown convention center and my wife was able to walk to the local shops and the beach during the day. The hotel does not have air conditioning but there is almost always a very nice breeze so it isn’t a real issue considering the weather is almost always 76 degrees.

We could walk around anywhere at night without worry. The restaurants we ate at on the island were good although we ate at more restaurants in the city. The Moo Time Café had good ice cream but a gelato place a block down and to the left was even better. Give it a try.

If we were to ever go back to San Diego, and couldn’t afford the Hotel del (which we won’t), we’d stay here again in a heartbeat.

“Funky, homey and perfect location!”

We stayed at the Coronado Village Inn for a week in early May 2006 and had a great time. The location is perfect - very close to the beach - you can hear the ocean at night - and around the corner from Orange avenue and restaurants and pubs. Pete was great - telling us about coronado events and always pleasant - he couldnt have been nicer and more accomodating. The Inn is historic and built in 1928 so there are some quirks - TINY bathrooms and creaky stairs, old time elevator - but to us that made it charming. It was so convenient to have a continental breakfast every morning down in the kitchen or take in a basket to the beach for a morning stroll and then head out for the day. Also since the Inn is so conveniently located - you did not have to use your car to explore the island and you could pop back in for a quick nap or change for dinner without time worries- a huge bonus for relaxation and feeling like a local. There is also the price which is fantastic for staying on Coronado and in a perfect location. We loved it and are not into cookie cutter chain hotels but enjoy B&BS and hostels so this is our kind of place.
