Visited Coronado Island as a quick getaway and tried to find a place to stay (actually drove around and looked at a few places when we got there, including the Hotel del Coronado, which seemed kind of rundown and chaotic to us when we stopped to look around - definitely not as friendly). The Marriott Resort was by far the best place we looked at (given what we were looking for). While the view is of San Diego (instead of beach/out to sea), the view is actually quite spectacular day and night. And there are chairs set up to enjoy it (which I enjoyed at sunrise). We really liked the ships (Navy and commercial), although I can see that some folks may just want the romance of a beach/ocean only view. There is a lovely and pleasant walk along the waterfront that goes up to several restaurants (the restaurants also continue along First Street and along Orange) so everything is in easy walking distance if you want to ditch the car. Even a supermarket (which was important to us with a baby).
Our room was perfectly clean and the bed was unbelievably comfortable. And the hotel provided us with a pack-n-play for the baby. Bathroom was large with a huge bathtub and separate comfortable shower. And equally as important (for us), there was a SMALL REFRIGERATOR (as opposed to just a mini-bar) - it didn't make any noise. We used it to store Champagne (glasses happily provided by the staff), fruit, deserts, milk (for the baby), and leftovers. It is such a convenience. There was an veranda (or balcony on the higher floors) complete with table and chairs (we enjoyed our Champagne out there). Our room overlooked the bay and was as pleasant as could be.
As other guests have noted, the property has an unbelievable staff (from top to bottom). I have rarely visited a place where the staff was as uniformly helpful, friendly, kind, prompt and all-round the way you always hope that you will be treated. Really outstanding. They should be very very proud of this (I hope they are).
The property also has several fountains/man-made ponds to add to the ambiance (and I assume give some rooms views??). Also pleasant and had my son mesmerized.
We ate breakfast at the hotel restaurant one morning and it was fine to great (my husband was fine and pleased enough with his omelet and I was *thrilled* with my bagel and smoked salmon - the bagel was okay but they gave me more salmon than I ever get anywhere which made me very happy and it included, on the side, herbed cream cheese, capers, onions, and tomatoes - yum!). Also, kids under a certain age eat free (can't remember the age because it didn't matter with the baby). The bartenders at the hotel bar were also fabulous and went out of their way to please.
The only negative of the trip was the family next door. They were unbelievably loud and rude (including standing outside our door to talk on the cell phone). We took care of it on our own, but I suppose the point is that the walls are not incredibly thick.
Three tips: We were able to haggle on the price of our room (not that I'm proud of this - and fortunately I was in the car - but my husband saved us a lot of money). And we parked on the street (easy street parking), which is an additional saver (I think the parking is $22). Finally, visit Tartine, a small French restaurant/cafe on First (a nice walk up about 4 or 5 blocks). We went for both breakfast and dinner and loved everything (including the wine -- yum).
We will be back.
Room Tip: Ask for a room with a bay view and don't be afraid to see if there are any deals to be had!
