“Great Weekend Getaway Location”

This was our first trip to the Carmel/Moneterey area of California. I did a LOT of investigating online since this was my first time traveling and not staying in a large hotel chain such as a Hilton or Marriott property.

Service: Very nice front desk lady at while checking-in late in the evening. She was very helpful in answering local questions about restaurants and shops. Checking-out was the same and we made small talk about the weather, other local attractions, etc. of the area. The rate also covered a basket delivered to your doorstep with a very basic continental style breakfast and newspaper inside. Don't worry, they won't knock on the door to wake you up. Overall, very friendly experience.

Value: I paid an average of $225/night for a Sat and Sun stay. Not too expensive, but not exactly cheap either. Hard to judge and I have no other Carmel stays to compare it with.

Room: We stayed in Room 116 of the Horizon Inn side of the property. It's located right along Juniper Street and it overlooks the town (slight ocean view) with an unobstructed view via your own balcony. Very nice. It had a king beg, 42" flat screen, bath/shower room, plus a fireplace that burns into the main room plus a private jacuzzi room. The wife really enjoyed the jacuzzi part... so did I!!! The room was clean with updated bathroom facets, toilets, shower head, etc. The carpet won't last too much longer, but it was still clean. Not the highest quality furniture, but the bed is fine as we slept well. The town is quiet, but being right along Juniper, you can hear the louder vehicles like garbage trucks. All the other rooms should be fine though. Overall, it had plenty of space for just the two of us. The jacuzzi and fireplace really set this room apart from a normal hotel experience.

Location: Not bad, but you're not going to be walking to the beach and back either (unless you want a workout). It's close enough to walk to all the shops and restaurants, but it is located on the outskirts of the downtown area. The beach would be just a little too far to walk.

We will definitely consider staying here again with no reservations about anything. But because Carmel is so nice, now we really want to try all the other B&B style properties.

“Great place to stay, never disappointed”

I travel to the Monterey area a few times a year and have stayed in many different Hotels, Inns, B&Bs, and in all the surrounding areas. I've been searching for a great place that is beautiful, well kept, and has exceptional customer service, Horizon Inn is the place. I have stayed there at least 8 times over the years and I've never been disappointed. The rooms are gorgeous (well maintained unlike some beach properties) with great views of the ocean or courtyard/spa, spacious (you can actually breath and move around in them), the service is excellent, and breakfast comes to you in a cute breakfast basket (juice, yogurt, bagels, pastries, fresh fruit, and utensils). The staff will go the extra mile to make sure you are happy and have everything you want/need. If you need recommendations for dinner, shops, spas, beaches, they have them. You get what you pay for at this Inn. It’s worth it! I love to stay in the premier ocean view or partial ocean view rooms.

Room Tip: I love to stay in the premier ocean view ( room 120, upstairs with a great patio with full ocean vie...

“Well run, ocean view a tad pricey”

Spent a couple nights during Christmas week. I do not have any complaints - wish I could have used the outdoor hot tub and had breakfast outside, but that was mother natures decisions. At 240/night in the winter season, I felt the price was inflated for Christmas week, but not being a hospitality person in California, maybe the owners know their market and tools for survival.

“Great bed, quiet, friendly service and the basket of breakfast was super”

My wife and I stopped in Carmel for our Christmas eve-eve wedding annaversary on the way to Chrismas with family. The bed was so good we called when we got home to see where we could buy one! I tried to turn down the offer of an early morning delivered breakfast as we were meeting pals at a local breakfast place near by. I am glad the desk manager said to get it anyway. It arrived in a neat basket filled with great juice, healthy cerial and local pastery & fruit. We still met pals but the pre breakfast "breakfast" was great. Travel is about a quiet room, a warm room, and for me, no lights to wake you up. My only concern was the"light" issue. The Inn allowed us to stay in a room for just one night. It was a fireplace king bed suite - designed for a handicaped traveler. For safety, it had very large amber lights above all the light switches & that was not something I coped with all that well. The room was fine and I would recommend it for sure. The desk people are first class & anxious to provide you with the best service and help they can. Enjoy!

Room Tip: Room with a view on teh 2nd floor would be my next choice.

Thank you for taking the time to write in and highlight some of the amenities that really stood out to make your trip extra special. I took particular note of your comments with respect to the "amber lighting" above the light switches. It is actually a "gift" from the State of CA when we signed on to help conserve energy. They also act as sensors and conveniently turn off lights left on for long periods of time when no movement has been detected. Apparently, energy conscious people are also "scared of the dark" and all light switches come with the built in nightlight. Most people actually like that feature because it helps them move around at night in unfamiliar surroundings. We have found that the quickest and easiest solution for people who are light sensitive, which I can completely relate to, is to cover those in the sleeping area with painter's tape. We will be happy to make a notation on your file if you mention that the next time you book and take care of covering those lights before your arrival. Thanks again for your honest critique of our inn. We look forward to your next visit.

“Best View in Carmel!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 November 2011

We just spent two nights at the Horizon Inn and it was everything we wanted. We were met with a very warm welcome by Brenda and John, who, I found out at the end of our stay, was the owner. They were most accommodating at helping us settle in and sending us to all of their favorite spots in Carmel. Being from a mountain town, we wanted to be able to see the ocean and we had room #114 -- definitely ask for this one -- worth the extra money. We had a large private balcony with a great view of the ocean and the mountains over the roof tops of Carmel. Think Sunsets!! I could have stayed forever!! Our room wasn't huge, but had a great fireplace, flat screen t.v., fridge, excellent shower, lots of drawers, chairs and table, along with other amenities too numerous to mention here. They even fulfilled my request and brought in a comfy reading chair!!!!! My only comment would be that the drapes and bedding need to be updated, but we were most comfortable there. I spent a lot of time trying to find the perfect hotel for our short stay (websites can be misleading) -- at a good value -- some places are very over priced in this adorable village -- but this spot was great. I highly recommend it just because everyone was so helpful and accommodating. By the way the towels were more luxurious than the Westin in SF!!

Room Tip: Room 114 -- best ocean view!
