My husband and I stayed at the Happy Landing Inn's room #3 which has two adjoining rooms connected by an entry hall on one side and a bathroom toward the backside. The bedroom is large enough to move around the King bed and has a built in vanity and mirror. The bed was ok but a little on the hard side. The adjoining room had a large gas fireplace with two chairs and a small sofa with a TV. It has a very nice cottage feel and was decorated with interesting antiques.
When we arrived, the table in the TV area still had crumbs and sticky dried juice on it from the previous occupants breakfast. Other than that, the linens and towels were clean because I checked them immediately after finding the soiled tabletop. Although the garden is lovely, it is small and situated in such a way that does not lend itself to "strolling" as the description would indicate. There is one small patio table with 4 chairs available for sitting under a weathered gazebo but it is so close to the other rooms one might not want to hang out there for fear of disturbing the other tenants.
Breakfast consists of 1/2 Costco muffin and approx 1/8 of a microwaved quiche, a very small glass of orange juice, 1 cup of coffee and about 1/4 cup of fruit per person. It's a nice gesture but if you like a substantial breakfast I suggest you find it elsewhere.
The location of this inn is truly it's defining charm. Located close to just about everything it is a mere stroll down the sidewalk to all the lovely shops and galleries Carmel has to offer. Turn right instead of left, and a two block stroll puts you right on the beach! Want to take the 17 Mile Drive; just turn right at the beach and your at the gateway! Truly a superb five star location.
Since we did not intend to spend alot of time in our room, the Happy Landing was a decent room for us. It is not what I would consider a luxury inn by any means. The shower in our room was the original pink and black tiled stall with a shower head that hit me at about chest level. (You pretty much have to kneel to wash your hair). There is no tub. The room does not provide any other source of water and bottled water was not provided, thus, if you get thirsty at night it's the bathroom sink. There is no mini fridge either so if you'd like have wine in your room, better stick to red's and don't bother to try keeping any leftovers from dinner.
Since this was our first trip to Carmel this provided a great setting off point for exploring the area and for the price, made The Happy Landing a pretty good value for the area. If your looking for a little more luxury, I'd suggest something a bit further from all the attractions because the location alone, of this Inn warrants the price.
