Similar to a lot of Best Westerns in that it is an older but extremely well maintained property. The public areas are especially well done with great sunset viewing. The rooms are clean and the beds are very comfortable. And I love the location.

The motel is right on the PCH, across the street from the Carlsbad State Beach. There is a traffic light/crosswalk that takes you to a paved path down the bluff. There are showers and restrooms at the bottom of the path. And a very long beach. You are a short walk to the dozens of restaurants in Carlsbad Village and maybe a 10 minute walk to the commuter rail station. That ride is mostly along the ocean and stops in Old Town and downtown San Diego. As a bonus, if you like microbrews, you're a short walk to Pizza Port Carlsbad, winner of the best beer brewing contest at the San Diego Fair for the last two years.

Our small family of three had a great visit here while visiting Legoland recently, which is just a short drive (5 minutes or so) away. As others have mentioned, from check-in, to the breakfast room, to the maids and maintenance crew, the staff is probably the friendliest and most helpful that you'll ever come to find.

Our room was clean, with some nice updating, and came with a kitchenette, full-sized closet, and fireplace. It seemed very spacious. The rooms at this motel surround an attractive courtyard. The rooms on the northside look out over the courtyard, while the rooms on the southside look out towards the ocean and have balconies. Something to keep in mind if that's important to you. Also, our room was towards the back of the motel so was quiet in the sense that we didn't get any noise from the road out front. However, because it's a motel, and the rooms surround a courtyard, there can be some nosie from people up and about early in the morning. If you're sensitive to that, earplugs would easily do the trick.

The breakfast room is large and bright, and has several tables looking out over the ocean, as well as some comfy leather chairs. The breakfast selections were fairly good. Cheerios, Rice Chex, Oatmeal, nice choice of pastries/muffins, toast, english muffins, juice, yogurt, hard-boiled eggs, and some fruit. Do-it-yourself waffles would have put it over the top. Next to the breakfast room is a welcoming sundeck looking over the beach, ideal for relaxing with a good book or taking in the sunset with a glass of wine.

One of the best things about this motel is the proximity to the beach. We sat back and watched our son play in the gentle surf there one sunny morning before heading off to the crowds at Legoland which for us was the perfect way to begin our day! Considering we didn't pay any more to stay here than we would have at one of the hotel chains further inland, this was priceless!

The location is fantastic, right across the street from the ocean. In the morning, you can cross the street and walk down to the ocean or sit on benches and watch the waves and surfers. The people in the area were so nice, they all would say hi to me as they walked by. I generally don't like BW as the one's I've stayed in the past were pretty run down. This place has been updated and pretty clean. This is a smoke free hotel meaning you cannot smoke on property (I had booked this through Priceline that gave me a smoking room which I wanted, this was Pricelines fault, not the hotel). The kitchen is HUGE so if you are looking for a place to stay for several days and plan on doing some light cooking (small fridge and microwave), this would be the place. There is a ton of storage which was about useless as you could put enough food for 2 weeks in all the cupboards. The coffee pot is a one cup maker. The beds are better than most BW I've stayed at. The only thing I saw wrong with the place was male (I assume) facial hair in the sink. I am not sure about the other rooms but mine had a fireplace as well as a heater in the room (which made a lot of noise in the evening). The breakfast (I didn't eat but did check it out) had cereal, boiled eggs and a couple other items. The only thing that bothered me (hence why I did not eat) was a tip jar. I didn't bring my wallet with me not expecting this so I didn't feel comfortable eating. The pool and hot tub are very small. During my time here, the heater in the pool was not working (with 65 degree weather, you need a heater). TV was okay, not many channels for kids. There is not an elevator (only 2 floors but lots of stairs) so if you have heavy bags, it isn't easy getting it to your room (I stayed towards the back of the hotel, 2nd floor). Didn't spend a ton of time in room as I was out site seeing the 5 days I was here. Walking distance to several restaurants, shops etc.
