We had to find a motel on short notice that could supply eight rooms for our family who gathered for our mother’s funeral. Motel 6 in downtown Carlsbad was the only one that could accommodate our needs on the Memorial Day weekend, other than the La Costa Resort, which was in the $350 range per night. We looked at the deceiving pictures on their website, and $69 sounded like a bargain when compared to our alternative. Who doesn’t look for a bargain in today’s economy? Most of us were pretty forgiving for the lack of amenities: no shampoo, recycled sandpaper on a roll next to the toilet, and no Kleenex. Our room had holes in the walls that look like they were patched with newspapers, and I don’t think the walls have seen a coat of paint in 20 years (they may have once been glossy white). The car wash I use has better towels than the ones supplied at this motel. The beds- I don’t know how to describe them, other than they were not much better than sleeping in the weed-filled rock garden downstairs.
We got over the problems, and actually turned the stay into an adventure, having a lot of good laughs about what we got ourselves into. We especially loved the bed spread with colorful “Motel 6” signs all over them, and took pictures so we can prove to our friends that we stayed in this motel. Even the idea of having to leave a drivers license at the desk in order to use an iron had us rolling in laughter. Then out of nowhere came the hotel manger from hell. I received a call about 3:30 in the afternoon chastising us for letting our kids run around our motel room. It turns out our room was directly above the mangers room, and we were disturbing her. I had to agree with her that my kids where too loud, and immediately quieted them down, and stuck them on a bed in front of the TV. About a half hour later, she called and repeated the earlier accusation – but this time no one had left the beds – we were too busy watching TLC channel. When I told her it wasn’t us, she became unglued and basically called me a liar. When I explained the situation, and expressed my dislike of her attitude, she quickly put me in my place, even letting me know she did not appreciate my “Back-talking”. As we walked out of the hotel later, she again trounced on us, warning me that if this occurred again… We walked away before she could tell us.
Later the next day, I found that my nephews were also woken up at 1:30 in the morning that same night and accused of being too loud. They had been sleeping for a few hours by then. It turns out the group that was creating all of the havoc was in the room next to them. Eventually, the night guard stationed himself outside that room, and the problem dissipated.
What gets me is the twenty-something manager did not bother to apologize for wrongly accusing me or my nephews. I know that her parents must be proud of her. She’s probably reached her pinnacle, and those years of education have really paid off. What more can a parent ask for? (I hope not grandkids!!!)
