“Fabulous Hidden Gem”

Wow! What a surprise! Wonderfully manicured lawns and ultra clean private casitas. Given the remote nature of this property, I was expecting more rustic accommodations. The grounds were gorgeous set in the mountains - and the whole property was much bigger than I anticipated. Perfect for an outdoor adventure. The thermal pool area was so fun. Start with slathering mud all over you, let it dry as you walk around well appointed paths full of things to see - natural boiling water and mud coming up from the ground and a nature path that runs along the river. Shower off and then sit in the natural hot springs. The sauna is a rustic wooden hut built over one of the natural boiling water springs. Incredible! The smell of sulfur and the sound of boiling water underneath you remind you constantly of where you are at. The pool is beautiful with comfortable lounge chairs, a breathtaking view, and swim up bar. The adventure doesn't stop at the thermal pools. We did the ziplining and horse back riding 2-in-1 combo package. It was awesome! The horses took you to beautiful waterfalls with stunning views of Rincon de la Vieja. The\ horses then dropped you off at the zipline area. The first of 10 ziplines is over a 100-ft gorge. Not for the faint of heart! I wasn't going to do it, but the guides made it easy and went with me on my first several lines. The tour was well worth every dime! At night, the only restaurant on the grounds was formal, but delicious. If you are in the Liberia area and like adventure, this is a must. We heard stories of the drive there, and yes, it's a little bumpy and dusty, but it was just fine. We were there during peak season, and there weren't many people there. The focus is truly on nature, as there is NO nightlife. A true outdoor get-away!

“Unique”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

This place has everything including a little adventure and also a great natural spa to relax. The mud, 3 natural water swimming pools with different temperatures, natural sauna from the volcano and also a canopy and tour to the volcano.
It is really great and unique experience. Every time I go to Liberia, I always visit.

“Great Hidden Gem!”

We just returned from a wonderful 3 day stay at the Hotel Borinquen. This was a wonderful secluded resort that consisted of a group of bungalows. The staff and managers were excellent and very accomidating. I had an unexpected orthopaedic injury that limited my mobility before I arrived, and they were able to find me many things to do. We arrived very late at night and the receptionist and the groundskeeper stayed to give us our key to the bungalow and to shuttle us up to the room. They made us feel very much at home. It was exciting and relaxing at the same time. The staff was most gracious in informing us of the terrain, nature and explaining everything. The volcanic mud was fun and the hot pools were so relaxing. We did massages at the spa and that experience was wonderful also. I would most certainly go back there in a heartbeat. They want you to relax and take care of you. You also have to remember you are in the mountains on Costa Rica time so relax and have fun. Food was excellent, had good selections to choose from. The breakfast that was included each day was excellent and was a good start to your busy day. "Pura Vida"

Room Tip: The furthere up the hill you go the better view you have of the valley.

My husband and I just happen to stumble upon this place after leaving a different hotel, and we are so glad we did. Just beautiful. The grounds and rooms are stunning. The pool was chemical free, water pumped from local hot springs. The also have mud baths and hot spring tubs on site. We spent a day horseback riding up the volcano, saw some waterfalls, and zip lined our way back down. There is a spa on site, as well. We got a "Wild Congo" massage that left me needing a nap after. They also used fresh fruit in the drinks! I have never seen someone actually cut up a fresh pineapple for a pina colada. Amazing. The staff all very friendly and helpful. And plenty of wildlife sightings: monkeys, toucans, an anteater. We will, without a doubt, make a return appearance here.
The only bad thing is stock up on the bug spray. Being in the mountains, I was eaten alive.

“nice place in the mountains”

This place is about an hour from Liberia airport. Rent an SUV, since the road there is unpaved. It is very isolated, but this resort has so much land. We went horseback riding, which was beautiful!
They have 3 hot pools which we used everyday, a mud area, and a big pool. We ate there everyday too, since there was no where else to eat, but the staff and service was GREAT! I really enjoyed our view from our bungalow. Reserved that, it has loads more privacy! Also saw monkeys, birds, and lots of wildlife. Definitely recommended!
