“Poor Service, Disappointing Experience”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2009

We chose the Blue Whale Inn for a special occasion, and contacted the property by telephone months in advance, to book a specific room. The Blue Whale website gives a detailed description of each room, and describes two of the rooms as being "favorites - booked well in advance" . We picked one of the "favorite" rooms, and were told it was available, and would be held for us. We also called two days before arriving to re-confirm the reservation. Upon our arrival at the Blue Whale, we were told that they had given our reserved room to someone else, because the heater had broken in their room, and they wanted to give them a nicer room to make up for the inconvenience. There were other rooms available, but they gave the other party our reserved room, with no concern about putting us out. The situation was very poorly handled, and the staff made no attempt to make up for the problem. Also, we had called two days in advance to order champagne for a birthday celebration, which they said would be in the room when we arrived, but they "forgot" about that completely. The breakfast was good - scrambled eggs and muffins, and assorted berries. Our previous stay at the Blue Whale was much better, but after this experience we would not recommend it.

“Love,love this Bed & Breakfast!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 August 2008

We LOVE this B & B! We have stayed 3 times over the last 5 years and we live in NJ! We stayed there with the old owners and now with the new management. We found that things are just as wonderful, in fact some things have been upgraded. They have put a Microwave Oven, Coffee Maker, and Cups/spoons,etc, in each room, contines to have DELICIOUS wine & cheese in early evening, and DELIGHTFUL and FILLING breakfast! (I have special dietary needs and they were more than happy to provide me with what I requested:-)) I found the staff to be generous and warm-thinking only of consumer service all that time! They will also assist you in any dinner reservations and special trips-like to the Hearst Castle-a MUST see! Also, they will recommend the fine Wineries in the area, which again, is a MUST see! The town of Cambria has great shops and places to eat..Trys Lynnes-great home cooking at great prices..There jams are homemade.
The location of the B & B, in my opinion, is great! You are not right on the Ocean, however, you are across the street from it. (none of the Inns are right on the Ocean, they are all across the street-I guess some may have a direct veiw though, however, I find that the Ocean can be noisey and this B&B is quiet) We would walk every morning on the man-made mini broadwalk to see the Seals and Otters. The squirrels are fun, too.
The rooms are amazing: very clean and comfortable! The bathrooms are spacious. They have cable TV and a mini refrigerator-which is great for I travel with medicine that needs refrigeration.
My husband, who is always leery about B&Bs loves this one, as I do! I can't stay even good things about this place! It does have a higher price tag than others in area, however, I feel there is great value in what we get and have never been disappointed in our stay!

“Pleasant but overpriced”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 October 2007

When we booked the Blue Whale Inn for one night, we knew that it was more expensive than the other places we had booked in Monterey and Sonoma but convinced ourselves that it wuld be something really special. I have to say that we were slightly disappointed.
Moonstone Drive in Cambria is on the spectacular ocean front. We, perhaps naively, didn't realise that all the seafront properties would be inns or B&Bs in one long strip! Having said that, they all look v nice and tasteful.
For the £178 room price, we were expecting a room overlooking the sea, In actual fact, the place is set out like a motel with all the rooms facing the parking lot although there is a great view from the breakfast room.
The largest single thing that put us off was the fact that no sooner had we arrived than our credit card was taken and swiped before we had even seen the room! So many other reviewers have raved about the hosts but while they were pleasant enough, they never introduced themselves altho one of the ladies did offer to book a restaurant for us.
The room itself was very comfortable and very large with a separate bathroom - it was a suite really. The hairdryer didn't work though which I would have expected to at the price we paid. I found out after I had gone to breakfast with wet hair that there should have been a replacement in the drawer.
Breakfast itself was nice and we met some good people there but we would not go back as there are so many other places to choose from.
The coastline at Cambria is stunning.
We ate at Wild Ginger which is a casual Singaporean place run by a really friendly lady called Debbie - fab!

“Amazing Inn!”

The inn was beautiful with breathtaking views of the ocean from the main house. You get to eat the excellent breakfast while watching the waves crash! In the afternoon they provide fresh baked cookies. Yummy! The wine and appetizers in the evening was also relaxing - and filling. We ended up being too full to eat dinner. The service couldn't have been any better! The innkeepers treated us like family. They even surprised us with a bottle of champagne and chocolates waiting in our room to celebrate our birthdays. When we asked for an extra water bottle, they gave us 7. We felt so pampered the entire time. We really didn't want to leave. We stayed 2 nights and thoroughly enjoyed it. I'd recommend this Inn to everyone. You won't be disappointed. (we stayed in room 2 which was very light and airy.)

“Great B&B;The Innkeepers Are Terrific!”

My husband and I have been fortunate in being able to travel often during our 40 years of marriage and we recently spent our anniversary weekend at the Inn. We found everything in order, a very clean, beautifully decorated room, gorgeous common room and well-maintained grounds. The web-site was accurate. However, we must commend the Innkeppers, Jay and Karen, for making our stay so enjoyable. From their welcome greeting, through their delicious gourmet breakfasts, homemade cookies, and cocktail treats, these folks certainly know how to make an Inn stand out above the rest. Great service!
