“Served our needs, staff is lovely.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 December 2011

We went to the Palms because I had a great coupon, I was pleased with what we got for what we paid, but wouldn't have been happy if I paid full price. The first thing that crossed my mind when we arrived was that the person who did their website did a GREAT job. The grounds and room were a bit bare, but tidy. Missed the warmth of carpeting and padded furniture, but realizing it's a pet-friendly place, that makes sense.
Borrowing the complimentary bikes in the morning was a treat, though with just four available, a busier weekend might have made it hard to get a bike when wanted. We walked a few blocks for a tasty pizza at JJs at night. Nice quiet location, very helpful staff, and the fire pit was a very nice touch. The heater was about 50 years old, and while it worked, it was very loud and counteracted the comfy bed. Not perfect, but not bad, I'd stay at the Palms again for the right price.

Room Tip: We requested one of the rooms with a king-sized bed. Rent bikes the night before to use for a ride i...

“OK for the price.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 November 2011

We stayed here for one night only in September 2011. The room was clean and very basic. It was perfectly acceptable for the money. The bathroom was a little worse, the cupboard has been water damaged, but the shower was good. My biggest disappointment, after reading other reviews, was that the fire pit was not lit. I was looking forward to it! Shame. Cambria is a lovely little town and I would wholly recommend it for a stop on highway 1.

“I wish I would have known...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 November 2011

The hotel is decent for the money and they've done a nice job rehabbing the 1950s style motor inn. The people at the front desk were so friendly and the location is great.
There are a few things that I wish I would have known:
1. There wasn't a bolt on the exterior door to the room, not even a chain lock. Just a keyed lock. Maybe Cambria is very safe, but that concerned me.
2. The heater must be the original wall heater. Although it works sufficiently, it's loud when it turns off and on all night.
3. There are no street lights on and no sidewalks for 80% of the way into town. We walked back from dinner to the motel and it was pitch dark. Once again, maybe Cambria is safe and crime isn't an issue.
4. The bed squeaks. Not good if you or your partner move around a lot at night.

Room Tip: Bathroom windows open to a condo complex next door.

“Yuck!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 October 2011

Stayed here one night recently in a 'patio' room after reading the good reviews or TripAdvisor and yelp. What a let down.... we were SO glad it was only one night.

The positives are... they completely re-did the exterior and landscaping of the place and it looks great.
I can appreciate taking an old run down motor lodge and giving it a cool, hip update. The trouble is it stopped with the exterior, landscaping and cool new logo.
The interior of our room was bad.............. really bad.
The bathroom was probably the grossest, most rundown bathroom I have ever seen any place. Yuck.
The towels were paper thin and super cheap.

The wood floor was cool and the bed seemed newer, but the pillows were completely gross. I looked inside the pillow cover and two of them were completely stained and completely disgusting!! Then I noticed one of the pillowcases had "Lompoc Valley Medical Center" printed on it? WTF?!
Was this someones personal used, stained pillow that they left in the room or was it one from the motel? And if so, why was is so dirty and why the Lompoc Valley Medical Center pillow case?
The whole thing just creeped me out.

I always read people say "the walls are paper thin"...I always think they are just exaggerating......... well, now I'm one of those people. .. THE WALLS ARE PAPER THIN and you will hear every word and sound from the rooms next to you. Especially in the patio rooms!! Holy hell it was horrible. BRING YOUR EARPLUGS!

For us, even the $89 price was not worth it. I would way rather pay $100 more and stay somewhere nicer.

The girl working the front desk was not friendly at all when we checked in. Didn't really even say one word to us.

When we left the next morning, all we could hear was the sounds of kids playing and screaming outside... turns out it was the kids of the housekeepers that were cleaning rooms while their kids played in the parking lot and in and out of the rooms they were cleaning.

This was just a horrible stay. I would not recommend this place unless you are on a tight tight budget and cant afford more.

Room Tip: spend more money and go to a different place.

Dear Guests

1) We haven't stopped with just fixing up the exterior of our property. We are small business owners who took over a dilapidated Motel 3 years ago in one of the worst recessions in history. If we were a big bank we would have transformed it over night but it takes time hard work and money. Because of this, we upgrade what we can every year. On our project list over the next 2 years are getting some hip flat screen TV's and updating the bathrooms to completion via remodel (we are about 50% on the bathrooms right now).

2) Regarding the comments on the beds: All of our Beds and pillows are new, however, like every other hotel in Cambria we do rely on one of only two outside laundry services in SLO county for laundering all of our linens. Regarding another business's pillow case on your bed, I have never heard of this happening but I can see how it could have happened if Mission Linen delivered someone else's linens mixed into our regular delivery. By the way, we would do the laundry in house if water wasn't such a rare commodity in Cambria. We do sincerely apologize for your discomfort at seeing someone else's pillow case and we will take steps to insure that this does not happen again.

3) Value & Service: Our goal is and will remain to give all of our customers a great experience for the lowest price possible, however we are not the Four Seasons. We own a 1950's motor lodge that we are slowly remodeling and upgrading while most business's are cutting back and retrenching. We are truly sorry for this guests negative experience and we ask for your patience as we continue to improve our property. We also would ask guests who have concerns during their stay to bring it to the attention of the front desk so that we can address it immediately.

Thank You
