“Look elsewhere!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 July 2007

Patrica (owner) is a sweetheart. However, at $200+ a night there are cheaper B&Bs in Cambria that aren't right on top of of Highway 1(half of the rooms face and are right on top of HW1 and it is loud). Furthermore, the B&B is pretty far removed from town (you are approx. a 5 min. drive from DT Cambria and the B&B is located on the far edge of your typical residential neighborhood, Not so much in terms of ambience.). Five minutes doesn't seem like much but it is if you consider it takes 5 minutes to drive through all of Cambria. Long story short, either stay at a B&B on the beach for the same money or in DT Cambria for less. If that doesn't work, drive 10 minutes south (on HWY 1) and stay in Cayucos.

“Cambria Discovery”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 April 2007

We discovered The Pickford House in 2005 and now stay there anytime we travel down the coast from Carmel. The owner/Inn Keeper, Patricia is gracious and welcoming. At many B&B's we have been offered a "continental breakfast" consisting of store bought pastries and tasteless fruit. Not so at The Pickford where we are always served a big, delicious, homecooked breakfast. Although the menu is the same each day, the Inn is not a restaurant and it is unusual that the same quality is delivered daily. The happy hour is another popular offering. Enjoyed the local wines.

Our room was comfortable, a good bed, and we loved the big clawfoot tub (original Victorian but resurfaced). We don't like the cookie cutter hotel/motel concept and that is not what you find at The Pickford House. Very homey and charming and good value.

“Holiday Magic”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 January 2007

Thank you Pickford House for adding to the magic of our Holiday travels! While traveling to S. Ca to visit family over the holidays, we had the pleasure of staying at the Pickford House in Cambria, Ca. What a magical place! I was immediately taken back in time the minute I walked through the door. The house is a museum of antiques and memorabilia from the era of the 20's & 30's, and right down to the clawfoot bath tubs. We were greeted by our hostess and invited to a much appreciated (after our long journey) and complementary selection of wines and hors d'Oeuvres. Our room was lovely and the long stemmed roses and warm comfy robes which were waiting for us were just the right touch. Breakfast was delicious and gave us a great start on the day before heading out to visit the Hearst Castle and then continue on our travels. I would definately recommend the Pickford House to others as a place to stay if traveling to Cambria California.

“What a Pleasure!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 January 2007

We discovered this beautiful Inn to stay near Hearst Castle on the Central Coast of CA in the heart of Cambria. We found The Pickford House very neat, comfortable, and fitting perfectly to what B&B's are known for. The huge mansion had an old Hollywood feel, 1920-1930 movie star theme. We stayed in the Rudy Valentino room. Very nice antiques, photos from that era, and again - super clean. Wonderful piano bar room, wood floors downstairs, carpet in rooms and many many antiques throughout. The innkeeper was lovely and made sure our needs were met. Thank you Patricia! We will return and recommend. You made our holiday weekend special. Thanks for all the tips for fun things to do in the area. The info at your desk with brochures was helpful too.

“Skip this Place While Visiting the Hearst Castle”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 January 2007

This B&B is located right in the middle of a residential neighborhood and up against a main highway. During our stay, we were forced to sleep with the window open in the middle of December because someone had sprayed our room with a very heavy and horrible room deordorizer. We ran the wall heater all night to offset the cold and feared carbon monoxide fumes due to lack of safety indicators on the seemingly outdated wall heaters. Our king bed was extremely low to the ground and we found this to be very inconvenient.

Very strange, but the alcove surrounding the amoirs still contained the closet pole brackets mounted on long 2x4s and these had been painted over instead of being removed. Very obviously a rush job...

The InnKeeper was friendly but distant and did not mention the elephant seals that were seasonally beached during our stay. I found this odd.

Breakfast food was excellent; however, the bar was not available during the evening reception. It was beer and wine only. Finger foods were Trader Joes and plastic plates were used for serving these.

Rooms were poorly appointed; bathrooms were inconveniently retrofitted with flow restrictors on the sinks. (Made it very difficult to wash hands and brush teeth.) Nothing in the shower to put soap on...simple vinyl shower curtain that reminded me of a motel 6 I stayed in during spring break in college. (Yuck)

We'll skip this one at nearly $200 per night.

  • Liked — Great Breakfast~!
  • Disliked — Horrible Location in Residential area and smell of disgusting room spray.
  • Tips/Secrets — If the price hits $39.99 per night, ok, go for it....
