I enjoyed my stay at this B & B. I found it by chance, on the web, after a long search for an affordable place to stay overnight. This was about the only one with a room mid-week for less than $100 a night. I wish it was listed at more sites, because I think more people should know about it.
It is a few miles out of town, so it is close, but also rural. I stayed in the Geyser Room, which has a great view of the valley with Old Faithful. It erupted every few minutes this AM, when I was there. so that was exciting. The bed was comfortable, and I didn't have to share the bathroom, though I would have, had the room next mine been used last night. I wouldn't have minded, though, since that is not a lot of rooms to share one with.
Debbie, the owner, actually asked me to write a review here, because sometimes people don't review her place well. I have read the first page of these here. She had said someone wrote ill of Debo, one of her cute dogs. I think they are both nice. I love dogs, and I think this is a real find for people who want to bring theirs, as that is possible.
My room had a large, comfortable bed with a canopy. I had never slept in a canopy bed, so that was fun. I actually got the brand name off a tag on it, to see if I'd like to get one for home, as you can hang it from the ceiling and don't need a 4-poster. I also had a TV with a large selection of cable stations, which I don't get at home, so that was nice, too. I enjoyed my continental breakfast on my private deck overlooking the valley, though the dining room has a large formal table all set for anyone interesting in eating there. No one seemed to do that, however, and I figured everyone was in their rooms or on their decks, looking at their views.
Debbie is a very nice person, who has an amazing history. Her great-great-grandfather was Senator Tubbs, who moved to that area about 100 years ago, so her family has been there for many generations. Tubbs Lane, where Old Faithful is, is named after him. She also has raised 10 foster children, and she told me she gets them and their children about 300 gifts each year. I was impressed.
This place is about 1.5 hours from where I live in Larkspur, too, in the Bay area. Why I never thought to go to Calistoga for a mini-break before is beyond me. I had never been to Old Faithful or the Petrified Forest before this. And the town itself is just the right size to get away from it all.
I plan to taking mini-breaks like this monthly, if my budget allows it. I will definitely go back to Hillcrest. I will agree that there was a mustiness in the air, and that the room where the fridge is kept is cluttered. I noticed a lot of wrapping paper, so that is where Debbie wrapped her 300 gifts, I take it. However, my room and the bathroom were quite clean, except for some hair in the tub behind the curtain, which she missed, and some minor stains on a bedspread.
That said, there were plenty of supplies, if you needed them, including several robes in the closet, about a dozen quilts, pillows, towels of all sizes, soaps, shampoo, TP, you name it. And the electric fireplace heated the room just fine for me.
I did see the pool enclosure, but I didn't ask about this. Next time, I will.
Debbie also recommended Paul Matsushita, a great massage therapist, who didn't have hours today, but I will make an appointment, if I can, next time.
Room Tip: I like the rooms with a view of the valley. I was going to get the Garden View room, with a private...
