“Not fancy, but comfortable”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 March 2011

We were like a lot of other travelers who booked the Grey Squirrel because it had the best value for our family of four. We stayed in the "Beaver" which was perfect for a family with smaller kids. The master bedroom was cozy, and the bed was SO comfortable. The kids' room was tiny, but perfect for two little kids- and they liked each having their own bed and not having to sleep together in a queen like they normally do when we travel. The grounds were clean and well-maintained, and the cabin had everything we needed. If you are looking for a clean, cozy place to stay, this is a good value.
There were only two things that were less than fantastic about the grey squirrel. First of all, the jacuzzi is old and funky. The room has a strange smell, and it takes forever for the water to heat up. If you want a relaxing soak in the hot tub, this is not the hotel for you. Also when we woke up in the morning Big Bear had received over 2 feet of fresh snow. We had a 8:30 ski lesson that we missed because no one at the Grey Squirrel will answer the phone or appear in the office until after 8 AM, and we could not get a shovel to dig our car out. I wound up digging out with a spatula and a baking pan from the room. Other than this quirk- we had a great visit and would stay here again- (though we'll bring a shovel with us!).

Thanks for your review. Jacuzzi indoors does tend to smell musty. We are working on bigger exhaust fans. Amazingly that week-end, the office was open early and we were out plowing. It was a beautiful week-end after a huge snowfall. Hope you got to your lesson on time. Jreed

“Good But Not Fancy”

We stayed at the Grey Squirrel for three nights in February. Our cabin was comfortable with two bedrooms and a small bath. Bring your own colander if planning to make pasta and knives if dull ones bother you. The cabin got COLD at night as the living room heater switched off each night. Bring extra blankets and plan on warming the place up for a while in the morning. We didn't feel like the place was especially dirty, but we did have ants in the kitchen and bathroom so pack foods up in ziplock baggies. Two out of three beds were sleepable, one was weirdly jiggley so didn't put the kids on it. It WAS super nice to have a couch and a DVD player. We definitely appreciated that. Will we be back? Well, not if we can find something a little bit on the nicer scale.

I am so sorry you didn't realize that there were 2 heaters individually controlled by independent thermostats in your cabin. As well, we have a storeroom full of supplies and a colander is a usual kitchen item we try and keep in the cabin. Try us again and thanks for your review.

“Just what we were looking for”

My husband and I went to Big Bear for a ski trip and got a great place at the Grey Squirrel. We wanted to stay at a small, quiet place and our cabin, the elk, was just what we were hoping to find when we arrived. The place had everything we needed including a fully stocked kitchen, DVD player, and wireless internet connection.
We got there late on a Wednesday night because it snowed on our way up. Instead of having to call the after office hours number to have someone come down and check us in, our key was waiting for us in an envelope at the office door, which was nice. The staff was very friendly and helpful with our questions about places to eat and directions into town.
I will definitely return here again.

“great value for mid-week ski trip”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 October 2010

We chose GS because it had a 3 nights for the price of 2 package w/discounted lift tickets. It was the best value we could find for our family of 4. We stayed in Badger cabin - which to be kind, is well-worn. But my wife and kids loved it, and it had everything we needed.

“Nice place at a reasonable price.”

After checking into another hotel in Big Bear, The Honey Bear Lodge. We asked for our money back and left. The staff was friendly there and gave us back our money with no hassle, but that place was old and not so clean.

We called around, and found The Grey Squirrel.

Staff very friendly and helpful. Grounds were beautiful. It was nice, clean and comfortable. Very pet friendly.

Would stay there again.
