We were like a lot of other travelers who booked the Grey Squirrel because it had the best value for our family of four. We stayed in the "Beaver" which was perfect for a family with smaller kids. The master bedroom was cozy, and the bed was SO comfortable. The kids' room was tiny, but perfect for two little kids- and they liked each having their own bed and not having to sleep together in a queen like they normally do when we travel. The grounds were clean and well-maintained, and the cabin had everything we needed. If you are looking for a clean, cozy place to stay, this is a good value.
There were only two things that were less than fantastic about the grey squirrel. First of all, the jacuzzi is old and funky. The room has a strange smell, and it takes forever for the water to heat up. If you want a relaxing soak in the hot tub, this is not the hotel for you. Also when we woke up in the morning Big Bear had received over 2 feet of fresh snow. We had a 8:30 ski lesson that we missed because no one at the Grey Squirrel will answer the phone or appear in the office until after 8 AM, and we could not get a shovel to dig our car out. I wound up digging out with a spatula and a baking pan from the room. Other than this quirk- we had a great visit and would stay here again- (though we'll bring a shovel with us!).
