“Nice place, but on the wrong side of the tracks!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 June 2010

My wife and I stayed here as the result of a Priceline booking. I appreciated the size of the room and the apparent upgrades to it. The room had a large screen tv, and was well-appointed, the the bed was too firm for me. My wife appreciated the firmness of the bed however. The kitchen appliances appeared to be modern and full size, though we did not use them. The bathroom was adequate, although the water pressure was a bit low for my taste. The only two negatives about the room was that one of the windows had some kind of film on it, like it had not been cleaned properly, and yes, like other reviewers, we were woke up to a train whistle, though not until 5 a.m.

Both my wife and I appreciated the full hot breakfast and the grounds were nicely landscaped in the center courtyard area by the pool, etc.

All in all, I would prefer to have stayed a little further away from the train tracks, but probably would stay here again, if the hotel filled my request on Priceline

“Don't even think about it”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 May 2010

I haven't had occassion to complain about a Marriott property before, and I'm surprised Marriott would let its brand be so badly compromised by this tawdry two star budget motel masquerading as a Residence Inn. It's next to a rail line, and we were constantly awakened by freight train whistles throughout the night. We booked a two bedroom suite because I'm an early riser who didn't want to disturb my wife and my adult son who was travelling with us. But, unlike other Residence Inns, the bedrooms aren't private - they're only separated from the living area by glass doors covered by translucent curtains which admit light from the rest of the suite. Also unlike other Residence Inns, it's a two storey motel with no elevators; you have to go outside to access the lobby and dining room; the dining room plates, dishes and cutlery are all plastic; and there is no wireless internet in the rooms. The tub in my son's room did not drain the water from his morning shower, but by that point we were already too disgusted to pay much heed. Clearly, Marriott's franchising standards are slipping, and I am now much less confident about relying on the chain than I have been.

Wished I had read the Trip Advisor reviews before booking this place. Avoid this dump. You'll pay Residence Inn prices for a Motel 6 experience.

“I love Residence Inns!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 June 2009

I will always choose a Residence Inn when there is one available. I was lucky and got a good price through Priceline. The hotel is right off of Freeway 99 off California Avenue. Very central location with restaurants, gas, and stores within a couple of blocks. Very clean facilities and room. Full breakfast each morning that was more than adequate.

“I had to fix the heater”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2009

As the desk clerk admitted when we checked in, this is one of the oldest Residence Inns. It is being renovated, but the renovations are not fixing the problems. Marriott should have demolished or sold this property or completely rebuilt it.

It is an old two-story motel-style complex with all rooms entered from the outside. There are no elevators to the second floor. Our door on the first floor was down a dark narrow passageway and the light outside our door was burned out.

There was a new stainless steel refrigerator in the kitchen, but this type of "renovation" will not make fix this hotel's problems. There were no regular dining chairs in our suite, only high stools.

The biggest problem was the bad state of the heating system in our unit. I checked before going to bed that air was coming from the outlet and set the thermostat. However, I woke up freezing (in January) at 3 a.m. I had to get out of bed, pull one of the stools into the bedroom, stand on top of it and shine my flashlight at the heat outlet. It turned out that the vents were 90% closed and that the lever on the outlet was frozen. Fortunately I found in the kitchen a "church key" type can opener which enabled me to open the vents. I found that some insulating material (I hope not asbestos) was jammed into the vents. My night's sleep was ruined as it took me two hours to get back to sleep.

We did not hear any train noise as our unit was at the southeast corner of the property. Ask for a room on the first floor in this corner if you do happen to stay here.

In summary, I have stayed at over a dozen Residence Inns and this property does not qualify for that designation. I have never had a significant problem at any other Residence Inn. In fact, they are one of my preferred chains.

“Overpriced Motel-Style Facility, Right Near a Noisy Train Track!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2009

The rooms are all accessed from the outside, motel style, which I hate and have not encountered with the other Residence Inns I've stayed at. A female alone, they stuck me in the way back where the construction and renovation was taking place. You could actually see into all of the dark, vacant, abandonded rooms from the outside as the curtains were left in various states of open. It was just starting to get dark outside. So creepy! Then I look out my window and there are a bunch of townies/locals loitering behind the building, just parked with their cars and hanging out on the property. Then the train! That was the last straw. I asked to be moved to a more populated area away from the train.

I was moved to another room by the pool on the first floor, a well populated area. It was a handicapped room, worsely put together than the previous room, grungier, and didn't have a stove, which I was counting on using. The girl at the front desk was clueless in every way when I mentioned these things.

By the way, my initial check-in was 15 minutes prior to the evening reception close. All I wanted was a soda. Nope, none to be found and apparently no one could locate a free single soda in the entire place. The rest of the food was picked bare. It looked to be just nachos and cheese sauce. It was a pretty sad display, and the lazy staff just shrugged their shoulders.

I eventually went to the front desk and asked them if they could make amends for my inconveniences, and she assured me she'd credit my Marriott account with extra points. Next day I checked my bill and have reviewed my account a few times since then. NOPE, she didn't. Big shocker there.

They have a bunch of cluless slackers at the front desk and this is probably the worst Marriott Residence Inn I have ever encountered. It's an overpriced motel. I will never stay here again. The price they charged was ridiculous. $150 in Bakersfield!!! Marriott should be ashamed to have their name on this facility.
