“A nice hotel, in the ghetto!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 October 2009

Hahaha... I'm chuckling thinking about our trip to this hotel. When looking at a map of Bakersfield, which I am not that familiar with, I chose this hotel for it's location: "downtown Bakersfield". Well what could be better than that? Sounds like it's in the middle of all the action... the reviews here are good, and the price was right (we paid less than $50). So I booked it.

Surprise -- Downtown Bakersfield is a ghost town. Everything is closed, empty, shut down, and you won't be within walking distance of any places to eat or shop. Nope. And this lovely little Inn is situated just past the train tracks and across the street from three bail bonds offices. A lovely, industrial-ghetto side of Bakersfield. My favorite part of staying here was when our friends we we were visiting told everyone they ran into:: "guess where they're staying!? The Downtowner!" and everyone's reaction would be the same: shocked, wide eyes. And no words.

Apparently this place has been recently renovated in hopes of losing it's old reputation. Apparently it used to be called the Downtowner and attracted plenty of underhanded types of people and activity. (This is just what we heard from locals. No official sources.) However, the reviews here aren't far off: Our stay here was just fine, and aside from being so far from anything to eat or do, we really couldn't complain.

Our room was clean, the bathroom was clean, bright, the a/c was old but it worked fine, the bed was fine, we had free wi-fi and free parking, which is under the hotel at street level. One can pay three times as much for a room at some hotel where one has to pay for internet. The signs in the parking garage say "park at your own risk" as there is no locking gate or anything into the garage. But nothing seemed fishy. The only way to get into the hotel is with a card key for the elevator, so that's reassuring. Sounded like the pool was a hit, and there were families with kids staying there -- perfectly normal. Oh yeah -- free breakfast, too! Make-your-own waffles, cereal, coffee and everything with a big screen TV. The girl at the front desk was very nice and did try to help us find a place to get drinks nearby (it was closed when we got there, but not her fault, just the ghost town).

For the price this place is a complete steal, it has all the amenities one needs, and friendly staff. Just be in mind of the location, and that you wil have tol drive to anything. Next time I would definitely get a room on Rosedale Highway, on one of the many hotels in the cluster where all the good restaurants and shopping are.

“Awesome place, especially for price”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 May 2009

six of us (three couples) stayed here overnight when no doubt played at the rabobank arena. we weren't impressed by the exterior of the place, but the people who worked there were very nice along with the check-in lobby. parking is directly underneath and you need a key to get into any area of the building which adds extra security.

we got two adjoining rooms which had two beds each. both had microwaves, mini-fridges, safes, and tvs with free hbo. the beds were VERY nice -- not your average motel beds. extra fancy pillows with comfortable sheets and a heavy bedspread. the towels were HUGE too... usually you get small dinky ones. along with a pool and jacuzzi there is a yard area with a gazebo. they allow pets too! we brought along our dog and he enjoyed the yard. for everything with triple a discount it came out to $150. not bad for two rooms split between six people.

we could even walk to our concert in about 15-20 minutes! this place is unbeatable for price, comfort, and service. i definitely wasn't expecting something like this for the price.

“Like staying with family & friends”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 May 2009

This place was like staying with family & friends. The rooms were comfertable & clean.
The price was right. The staff & owners were great, I can't say enough about how great they are. A very enjoyable stay. Nice pool area & court yard
I visit Bakersfield about 3 times a year, this is my new home away from home.
Room 205, it is directly across from the lounge area so does get a little noisey if they are
out there visiting.

“Feeling at home in a motel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 April 2009

I stayed at Guesthouse visiting my daughter for a week . This is truly a "guest house", by definition, I felt like a guest of friends, not just staying somewhere. Friendly people, Mel, Emmett, Matt, Christina , a relaxing atmosphere, plus clean, comfortable rooms, equals a pleasent experience.

“WOW!!!!!!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 August 2008

I can only say wow!!! This hotel looked awesome and was affordable. It ooze's character as well as having a great staff. Even the owners were on site to help out and answer questions.
This Hotel has recently changed ownership and was also remodeled. If I were you I would stay here.

  • Liked — The Rooms and the Staff and the pet area to the side of the motel
  • Disliked — I can honestly say that I liked everything and I am critical.
