I reciently stayed at the Asian SR Hotel in Chittagong.
I decided on this Hotel after looking at all of the avalable Hotels (5 only), they returned my e mail enquires, rates were good and it seemed central, and I could find basically where I would be staying using Googla earth, a good start. One other was very expensive why I chose here .
On arrival through the maze of tooting traffic at night time I saw a clean looking Hotel with a clearly lit sign - thank goodness I `m here at last.
The reception had my booking information, I up graded to a room with a Air Con in case it became too hot to sleep, the room was clean and compfortable - I was ready for a good night, awaken at 4.30 am for Pray time anounced at AC / DC (Aussie Band) amplified volume introduced my to my first day here.
Breakfast was good - I brought my own Vegimite for toast, nice fruit salad and bottled water and a cups of Coffee.
The Hotel staff are very friendly and assist you enthustically, talk about Cricket and Ricky Ponting (Australia Team Caption - un knowing Americans) and they get very excited !
Waiting for my friend to arrive by car the hotel staff keep away beggers and interested locals keen to look at a Westener, Go shopping expect to hear Hello, be watched and asked where you are from "Australia" Ricky Ponting ! yes he lives next to my house and they go wild not seeing the Joke at first . Buy your cloths here as they are very cheap had trouble finding Levi`s at first need to look around before you decide many styles avalable street stall`s cheapest, Shops better quality they all measure you, but try on at your hotel and return if the fit is not correct - no problem (is a must).
The City is a maze of small Shop tunnels selling every thing except Beer and english spoken DVD`s Food in abundance very smelly at times very interesting and colourful items to be seen .
Power in Chittagong is terrible goes off all the time but the hotel and many businesses have generators - Carry a torch when out exploring at night, I had NO Security problems only on lookers, Police seen every where carry Chinese Rifles and Pump action shotguns must be the reason !
Not a place for western woman - I feel, as 98% of Business are staffed by men because of their religon (with respect). I was invited to my friends Mosque and was made very welcome and understand a little more how similar we all are.
I wish to Return to Chittagong another time and explore more hopefully with a friend, I had a GPS (Garmin) in case I got lost a good idear used it many times.
Rick Shaw and Miny Taxi`s are good transport did not attempt to get on a Bus overcrowded with passangers hanging on to the rear bumper and on the roof rack.
