“Worst hotel on our trip”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 July 2008

On arrival late at night the desk clerk knew nothing of our reservation. Our room was unrenovated and without doubt the worst hovel we have ever stayed in. A heavy layer of dust and filth covered everything, including the aged decrepit "furniture". The patio doors were "locked" with a broken piece of wood. The bed sheets were threadbare and a sullen grey color from years of inadequate washing. The tiny bathroom floor crawled with insects, to the point where my wife refused to enter, and I would not even consider having a shower (probably no warm water either!). We both slept fitfully on TOP of the bed! Next morning the desk clerk was not even aware of our presence, and after paying we quickly left, NEVER to return again! PS: it is NOT close to El Chepe, which is probably 5 miles away via taxi.

“Good for Chepe Travelers”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 January 2008

I stayed at the Montecarlo for just one night before taking the Chepe train to Chihuahua. I enjoyed the colonial atmosphere, the staff was friendly and helpful, giving me a wake-up call and having a taxi waiting when I came down (and telling me how much the regular prices were so the driver could not rip me off).

The food in the restaurant was authentic Mexican food, the room was clean but small and dark. As a single woman I would ask for a room close to the patio, the dark, long corridors to the quieter rooms might make women feel uncomfortable coming home at night.
