“Half an historic building”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 September 2009

This Parador (****) is built around an ancient tower, in which there are only a few rooms. The rest is in a newish building, connected with a glass corridor to the tower. The tower rooms are about EUR 30 more expensive, but I did not see them, so am not sure what that gives you.

Vilalba is only a small town and the hotel is smack in the middle of it. Like in ALL Paradors, the staff hardly speaks English, is always in a hurry, the food is "just OK" and the breakfast buffet is good.

“For a parador - not good enough”

We have been a bit dissapointed about this parador.
While vistiting the North of Spain we slept in 6 paradores and this one was the worst.

A lot depends on the surrounding area which isn't very nice. The town is quiet ugly und the landscape is a bit boring. When you look out of the windows the first impression was a pitiable sight of a neighbor house left by the inhabitants with broken windows.

Rooms were nice and clean and at good parador-standard, also no complaints about the very nice and helpful reception.

But Service at dinnertime was dissapointing. We had to ask for a wine cooler for our high budget white wine for two times. Then they brought as a wrong plate and my husband had to wait for 20 min for the ordered one...for a excuse we waited in vain.

  • Liked — reception, tidiness
  • Disliked — service in restaurant, area

“Give this one a miss”

This is a less than average Parador in a well below average location.

Vilalba is a drab commercial town which has been bypassed by the main road and, seemingly, by progress. The Parador is in the centre of the town and is hemmed in by buildings, many of which are shabby. The friendly staff do their best but they cannot make up for the hotel's deficiencies.

The character rooms are in the restored mill, but we didn't see those. Instead we were in the main block with most of the other guests. The room was OK but walls and doors were thin, so noise carried into the room until late at night.

We didn't eat dinner here, but breakfast was OK.

There is no free parking at the Parador, so you have the choice of parking in the streets (if you can find a space) or paying approx 11 Euros to park in the hotel's underground car park. We felt it better to pay and be content that our car was secure for the night.

If you do stay here it would be advisable to reserve a car park space when you book, as the garage was not huge.

I cannot think of a thing to recommend this hotel. If you are staying in the Paradors then you would be much better off in Ribadeo or (for real luxury) in Santiago de Compostela.

“Avoid the experience”

Hotel is situated in a quite town which is of no paticular interest. The hotel is centrally situated and is clean and attractive. However, meals are a disaster. Breakfast food is very limited and the service for coffee is an eternity. Staff seem to be stretched to the point where they can no longer cope. The evening meal suffered the same service but worse was the food itself. The menu seemed reasonable but the courses, when they arrived, were unbelievable. My chioce was a casserole, which consisted of cubed potato in a watery liquid with one small cube of meat. The other courses were small and of very poor quality. Considering the cost in what most people would consider a premier hotel, I felt 'riped off'.
