We were staying elsewhere in Soller, but decided to visit the Gran Hotel to have a look round, try out the bar, and possibly stay for a meal. Frankly, we were amazed at the five star rating. The service in the bar was slow and cursory, the atmosphere unwelcoming, and the overall ambience poor. At 7.30pm, there was no-one at the door to welcome arrivals. The decor in the bar was uninspiring, and had a decidedly 80s feel to it. Another party in the bar were having trouble attracting the attention of bar staff, who were chatting behind the bar, and occasionally attending to a large party in the restaurant area alongside the bar. We eventually ordered a couple of cocktails, which arrived unmixed, with no nuts or olives offered. I asked at reception for a menu, which I was given, though I was told "the restaurant is fully booked with a private party" (even though we could see there were many empty tables). When I returned to reception a few minutes later to hand back the menu, there was no-one around, even though I called out for some help, no-one appeared.
Overall, the service levels were low, and to call this a five-star hotel is extraordinary. The higher levels of hotel ratings are all about service, and having stayed in many five-star hotels around the world, I have never seen such poor service in a hotel with this rating. I wouldn't dream of staying there.
