We just spent a great week touring around a bit of the Spanish countryside. As a treat we had reserved a room at the castle in Alcaniz. Our room was outstanding as we were given a suite in one of the towers; it was 2 levels and the views were incredible. We slept like a King and Queen that night. The reception staff were helpful and friendly. We had dinner that night in the grand and huge dining room - it was like stepping back in time with the old chandaliers and the staff dressed in traditional outfits. Although not all the staff spoke English well, we had no problem ordering off the extensive menu. (It helps to smile and be friendly). The cuisine was typical of the region and we had a fabulous meal. For all those who want to experience a 12th century castle that has been beautifully restored, then the Parador de Alcaniz if for you. We highly recommend it.

Stayed here for two nights on a trip around Aragón and Navarra. Spacious room with amazing views. Great food. Staff fairly neutral (the people who make up the rooms always seem to be the ones to give you a genuine smile and ‘hello’.) You can visit the church that’s part of the site and see the fabulous wall-paintings. It was lovely sitting in dappled sunlight in the courtyard. Worth popping down into the town to see the old buildings and the tunnels that used to be used as wine-cellars etc.

Stayed overnight travelling from Madrid to Barcelona. Being a sunday the town was very quiet but the ambience of the Parador was enought to keep us happy. We had a triple room which was roomy enough and had a lovely bathroom - great towels. Great views as the castle is on top of a hill. We had dinner in the hotel restaurant which was a lovely setting. As it was my birthday, in place of a cake, my daughter and I ordered the cheesecake for dessert - our mistake - not like our cheesecake - more like curdled cheese in the shape of a cake. I think one night is plenty though, as there is very little around it.
