First, let me say that we are seasoned travelers and have traveled extensively in Europe and Asia. Few weeks ago we stayed 2 nights in Burg Bernstein which was recommended by Karen Brown Austria guide. Here’s the summary of our trip.
Unbelievable Rudeness by the Owner.
The owner greeted us upon arrival with what I can best describe as “sarcastic charm”. He could not wait to tell us that he was related (or his wife really) to local nobility. He very rudely corrected my husband’s pronunciation and was constantly looking down his nose at us. He then explained that we were in the wine country and should go out to taste wine. Based on our discussion we understood that we were allowed to bring a bottle into the dining room with us for dinner. It is important to point out that the dining room is not a restaurant, but rather a room where the guests take meals that were prepared by the kitchen staff. There are no menus or choices, you basically eat whatever was prepared or you don’t eat at all. The lack of menu did not really bother us too much as we are not picky with food. Our last night we asked our waitress to open our bottle and she gladly did so. Halfway thru the meal, the owner approached us and very rudely told us that may be brining your own bottle of wine is customary in the United States, it is not done in Austria. He then proceeded to rudely give us a “lecture” on proper behavior in Austrian restaurant. My husband and I needed a few minutes just to get over the shock of his rude behavior, especially since our kids were at the table with us. Neither one of us has ever encountered such unbelievable rudeness in hotels or restaurants before. His parting shot to us was that he was going to charge us for opening the bottle, but he did not decide yet how much.
Accommodations
Best description is “Shabby Chic”.
Although the owner is quick to point out that this a castle hotel, it does not really have a castle feel. It is a large old house that needs a lot of repairs and upgrades. We were shown to our rooms (we booked 2 rooms for us and the kids) which were in two different buildings separated by a courtyard. One room did not have a bathroom and we were told we would need to use the facilities in the hall. This was not communicated to us during booking. The hall shower had a broken shower door with half the door missing. The second room had a bathtub and shower but no shower door or shower curtain. It was impossible to take a shower since the water was everywhere.
The steps going to the second floor were broken and a serious safety hazard. There was hardly any light. There were some candles lit but they certainly did not provide enough lighting. The paint in the rooms was chipped, and the entire place needed a good cleaning.
Meals
Dinner was served in the dining room. There was no menu, you essentially had to eat whatever the owner’s wine prepared that day. For the most part the meals were ok, however they were very basic and certainly did not cost what the owner was charging for them. I would suggest going to restaurants.
