Its not in Dharamshala, its actually some kilometres above Mcleodganj and the rough road takes about as long to drive up as it takes to walk down from there. The final approach requires a 700m climb on foot, but if you're not up to it they'll send you a charming and stubborn pony called Chandra to take you up. The owners - Bo and Shiela are welcoming, Bo can be boisterous and Shiela is charming and very helpful. Your holiday will certainly be peaceful, a welcome reprieve from the city (even the rather crowded Dharamsala and Mcleodganj). Eagles' Nest has a charm that endears most nature lovers. The only source of disturbance can be the other guests...so much depends on your luck and whether you enjoy their company since you will dine together if you are so inclined - they are building a separate dining area. Hot water comes from solar panels and can be difficult to come by if the sun fails, but the staff will provide hot water in buckets for your bath in the nice clean bathrooms. Our children loved playing with the dogs, Chandra and the neighbour's friendly pony Lalli. You can walk outwards to see the Dhaulagiri range and the tea shop down the hill could become your favourite haunt especially if you don't like to trek to McLeodganj (about 30-40 minutes serious downhill walk). If you bring your car, you'll have to leave it at the tea shop just below Eagles' Nest. Taxis and Three-wheelers adventurously cart you back from Mcleodganj up the rough road to the Tea shop (presently for Rs. 300 or 150 respectively). The staff are most helpful and the (mostly continental) food is good. The hotel organises a reasonably good massage but don't look for hot springs here, also be careful about the walk beyond the hotel (up the hill), there are some rather ferocious dogs there. All in all we'd recommend this hotel for peace, quiet, ponies and an unhurried stopover close to nature.
