This was one of the rare vacations when I chose to make plans & hotel bookings in advance. Well, I was extremely delighted I did that, as being a long weekend, all worthy properties were packed to capacity.
I looked up this property on the net, having liked what I saw, I proceeded to make the booking for a 2N / 3D package. Being off season, got a nice deal too...
We left for Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh, India on 13 Aug, halting enroute at Barog, a small hill station. The drive to Dharamshala next morning took us approx. 8 hours, travelling a distance of nearly 260 kilometers through the lower Himalayan ranges. We reached Dharamshala at around 7 pm in the evening, and had no trouble in locating the property which is situated approx. 100 meters from the main shopping area.
We were greeted at the property & quickly led to our room. The entire property has an old world charm, and staying here felt nothing short of being a part of history. The property has 14 rooms, all gracefully done with modern fit outs. As it turns out the property belonged to a former Chieft Justice of India and was later converted as a resort.
The propertly itself was very tastefully & elegantly maintained. Two small well kept gardens in the front, beautifully done dining hall complete with crockery on display with seating capacity of around 30 people, small sit out area on the Ground Level provided an excellent appeal at the first sight.
The room provided to us, as it turned out was the one where Mahatma Gandhi stayed and is aptly titled Mahatma Gandhi suite. This was an unknown facet up untill we checked in and were led to our room. Each of the 14 rooms are in some way part of India's history having had iconic personalities like Mahatma Gandhi & Lord Mountbatten as some of the distinguished guests here.
The hotel has a small private collection of books, some very old, open for guests' reading pleasure, which doesnt require any permission, giving the place a very homely feeling. Having a royal history is clearly visible through all the features, the pictures on the walls, framed letters written by Mahatma Gandhi, and other memorabilia.
The property offered some rare glimpses in History. The stay here exceeded all our expectations. The staff is very hospitable, providing comfort & privacy at all times, and very accomodating.
The stay at this property offered us an unforgettable experience, one which we would definitely like to repeat!!
