Gorilla Forest Camp is a beautiful camp that blends seamlessly into the living, tropical forest. It is just a few minutes from the orientation and starting point for gorilla trekking Bwindi's Impenerable Forest. The lodge team, headed by King and Ian are very hospitable and attentive. Chef Medad whips up magic in his kitchen - in the middle of nowhere.
I liked the hot water bottle in my bed and that my large tent had a flushing loo (a rarity in Uganda) and both a shower and a bath. The forest-view bath is a great place to soak shattered muscles; and reflect on the journey of a lifetime...
Be under no illusion, gorilla trekking is tough going but; well managed with regular shaded stops and lots of water. We zig-zag climbed 6000 ft in just over two hours. Three young gorilla frolicked and foraged right up close, literally at arms length! In the hour we spent with them we took great photos and video clips and also sat back to appreciate how special it is to view this particular family, part of only about 700 gorilla, in the world. It was magic for this ‘Mizungo in the Mist’.
After recouping from our gorilla trek we visited the Batwa Pigmy with interpreter Eliphaz and Pigmy Elder, James. This is a fascinating, funny and interactively enjoyable tribal experience that improves the lives of all the Batwa Pigmy.
- Ask for Rogers, an exceptional, driver and the star of the Gorilla Forest Camp team.
- Ask for David the Uganda Wildlife Authority, senior guide. His fondness, respect and knowledge of the gorilla - makes the trek.
- Ladies, ask for Glorious a sure-footed porter who literally hand-holds you along the treks more challenging parts.
