I stayed at the Simon's Town Quayside Hotel in Feb/March of 2011. Overall, it was a great experience.
As a woman arriving at midnight to the SA airport, I was quite nervous about transport to Simon's Town. The hotel arranged a transport with Proximo Shuttle Express (www.proximo.co.za). When my flight arrived, a smartly dressed driver was waiting for me with a professional looking sign with my name on it. He drove me to Simon's Town, stopping in a couple places with a great view. His caution and attentiveness helped my transition a great deal.
My room at the Quayside overlooked the harbor, with big French door windows that opened up for a great view. I'd definitely pay for a harbor view room, and the rooms on the first floor with a balcony were even nicer. The room was clean, the air/heat worked well, and there was an easy to use safe in my room. For the rate I paid R 875, I was quite content with the value. I paid for the room in advance, and upon checkout I was pleased that the bill matched exactly with the arrangements I had made in advance.
The young woman who staffed the front desk during much of my stay was extremely helpful. She arranged a day tour with FarOut (http://www.faroutevents.co.za), which was fantastic! for R650, the guide drove me all around the peninsula for the entire day. The guide was helpful, flexible, and really worked to make the day be what I wanted it to be.
Boulder's Beach was a 20 minute walk up the road, and there we neat shops and local's selling crafts nearby.
The only negative I must report about my stay at the Quayside happened the night of my arrival.. Thankfully, the driver from Proximo insisted on carrying my bag to my room. We were startled to discover a man, apparently intoxicated and passed out at the end of the hall way, right outside my room. At 2 o'clock in the morning at the point of my first arrival in South Africa, this was disconcerting to say the least. We went down and got the desk clerk, who tried unsuccessfully to rouse the man, and he was left there to sleep the rest of the night. This also made me aware that my room door was flimsy like a closet door, with no deadbolt. The hotel told me later that the man was a guest who had come home intoxicated.
