You've got to want to go to Amazonia Lodge to be anywhere near it. Used as a stop-over for many Manu tours, we used it as a final destination along the Manu Road as any further would take us into serious bug/frog hell (as seen by my wife) and this was the compromise.
And what an excellent compromise. The 10 minute boat journey from Atalaya sets the scene (as well as the scramble up the bank on our arrival). A 15 minute walk along a trail to the house through the forest and over a couple of rickety footbridges helps to cement the notion that you are in a remote place.
The Hacienda is quite large and in a large clearing and so there were few bugs around - plenty of birds though.
Rooms were basic with just two beds and a table. There's no en-suite - a toilet/shower block is outside (something my better half wasn't too keen on, especially after dark). The veranda was birding heaven (especially when it was raining, which it did every afternoon and night).
Meals were very good but probably too much at lunchtimes. The generator was switched on between dusk and about 9pm each day - otherwise it was candle light (or torchlight). I was ill on my first day (heat more than anything) and the staff were most attentive and concerned.
Definitely a place to visit. Bugs were few but in the evening, the veranda lights attracted some including large stick-insects and one very large frog. Otherwise the place was amazingly relatively bug free.
A place I hope to return to one day.
