We travelled to the Orphey with some trepidation having read some of the reviews on here, but our fears were soon put to bed.
Our room was spacious, clean, and quiet with lovely views of the mountains.
The staff on the whole were polite and helpful, slight language problems at times, but hey, how many English hoteliers speak ANY Bulgarian?
The food was as expected in this part of the world, our only problem was the fact that our visit coincided with a conference of Bulgarian and American students. If you got the timing wrong you ended up in a long queue of students, who piled enough food on their plates to feed a family for a day in many parts of the world ! Or if they had just gone through the dishes were empty and a wait ensued for them to be replenished.
At times we felt a bit like second class citizens as the students seemed to get preferential treatment, and twice our meal times were changed at short notice to accomodate their needs. This was our main complaint, but when the hotel were told this the second time, they did allow us to eat 15 minutes before the hoards descended.
The hotel is ideally situated for the old town, 5minutes,but a long trek to the cable car station, unfortunately this was broken down, which made access to the mountain very difficult for walkers.
The pool was nice and relaxing after a day walking in the sun, although more sun beds would be welcome.
All in all a nice hotel, and certainly good value for money.
Bansko is a mixture of old and new, we stuck mainly to the old part, and found it an interesting and welcoming town.
We were also lucky enough that our visit coincided with the Jazz Festival which gave us access to great free concerts every night if we wanted them.
