“Should of Stuck with the Horses”

I took my son to Scott Valley Dude Ranch back in the 80s, as my parents took me since I was about 5 0r 6. I probably am the only guest that returned shortly after leaving her vacation to get married on horseback with a local yokel. Tom & Kathleen attended the horses while the ceremony was given by a Justice of the Peace. I would love to reconnect with Kathleen to express my sorrow about her loss of Tom and because she is such a nice person I will never forget. Also when my parents took me there in the 50s, I was actually in their brochure on a swing set, how cool is that?

“Wonderful getaway”

My husband and I just spent our third anniversary at the ranch. I wanted to find a place where he and I could have some time away from our busy jobs. Scott Valley was wonderful! It was so quiet and relaxing. They had just refurbished the pool and it was great. The bed was great and the air conditioning in the room perfect. The food was good country cookin and they really catered to my husband's favorite foods. They also made sure he and I got alot of alone time. My husband is an experienced rider but hadn't riden in 5 years. It was really great seeing him have so much fun being back on a horse. The horses were all so friendly and there was a new foal born the day before we got there. If you want to get away from it all and just enjoy your family this is the place to go. I wouldn't trade the experience for the world!

“Fantastic Stay!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 June 2008

My family and I have stayed at Scott Valley several times, and the vacations just keep getting better. What appeals to me and my family most is having the option to do as much or as little as we want. Whether its trail riding, lounging by the pool, or fishing area rivers, Scott Valley accomodates its visitors. Truly there is something for everyone here. We are looking forward to our next vacation; it's like going home again.

  • Liked — The staff was friendly, and the whole atmosphere was quite relaxing.
  • Disliked — It's definitely off the beaten path, but that's not always a negative thing.

“If its horse riding you want, this is for you!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 June 2008

Our son was about to marry in Arkansas, USA and travelling to Little Rock from England we thought we would stay a few days longer and go horse riding. We had experienced guest ranching in Colorado for a number of years and it was a surprise to find a website for a guest ranch in Arkansas (in the Ozarks).
We saw some of the previous reviews, one of which was not very complimentary, and booked in for 3 days. We had a great stay. If the purpose of your visit is horses and riding, this is for you!
Horses - Missouri Trotters (the breed previously unknown to us) were in excellent condition and well schooled. A really comfortable ride and a selection of horses to suit all. The forward going horses were a joy to ride. We had two knowledgeable, friendly and caring wranglers who wanted to make every ride, 'our ride'.
Rides - the trail rides through woodland were very scenic but it was the rolling open meadows/pastures that were the highlight. Great for walking, trotting and especially canters (loping).
Food - home prepared, abundant and very tasty. Apart from the horses, this is the owner's passion.
Staff - I'd prefer to call them our hosts as everyone made us feel so welcome.
Accommodation - rooms are in family units in two 'motel style' blocks. Some rooms have recently been refurbished and others are in progress. Ours was a refurbished 2 bedroom air conditioned unit with bathroom (bathroom a little dated) and storage space and was very comfortable and clean with excellent furnishings. The decoration style was cowboy. Good large bed in the main bedroom with bunk beds and a single in the second bedroom. Fluffy towels and quality toiletries.
Overall - rustic is a fair description of the ranch. If its quality horse riding you are looking for then you will not be disappointed. You will be well fed and sleep soundly!
We were the only guests during our stay so there were no arranged social activities or other guests to interact with.

“Vacation of a lifetime”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 April 2007

I booked a long weekend at Scott Valley for my teenage son and I to get away for some time together. I was totally unprepared for the experience we had.

The rooms were indeed rustic, but there's no surprise there. The website clearly explains what you can expect to find in terms of amenities and surroundings.

What I thought was going to be a 'hardship' (no phones or televisions in the rooms) was actually a blessing in disguise. Being a very busy working parent with three children (two are teenagers) I seldom have time to spend like I would want to with them on an individual basis. Not having television and telephones in the rooms allowed us to really focus on spending quality time together.

When I booked the reservation with Kathleen Cooper, the ranch owner, we chatted at length about what to expect, what to bring, etc., and I can say that she did a phenomenal job of setting the proper expectations for our visit.

Our stay was in the late fall, so we were one of only two groups there, which was fantastic, since it allowed us a lot of time to interact with the other people and the ranch staff. I might also mention that I still know the names of each and every person I met at the ranch that weekend (Tobin, Della, Tim, Rose, Al, and Katherine, not to mention Kaye and Nickie, our fellow guests), and I'm a person who forgets your name as soon as you introduce yourself to me... that speaks VOLUMES about the wonderful people at the ranch.

The horses were great and extremely gentle to a novice rider, the food was excellent (and I'm a good cook myself, so I'm usually very critical about food), and the Ozarks in the autumn blaze of full color was awesome. Kathleen even let me into the kitchen on a couple of occasions, so I wouldn't go totally into withdrawl.

I've kept up contact with Kathleen since our stay, and am planning on bringing the entire family back for another stay this fall.

I read through the other review which was not favorable, and can tell you that it was the exception and not the rule, based on my experience and the comments of the other guests while we were there.

If you're looking for the Ritz Carlton, keep right on looking. Scott Valley is a guest *ranch* which caters to people who are looking for a great time away from the hustle and bustle of day to day life. The rooms aren't posh, the grounds aren't manicured, and the staff don't wear a coat and tie. The rooms are indeed rustic, but after a day in the saddle, I slept like a baby. The meals are served family/buffet style, and I didn't have a single thing to eat that wasn't good. Kathleen jokes about her menu having two choices, "Take it" or "Leave it", but she bends over backwards to accomodate you and especially children who tend to be picky eaters. And if you leave the table hungry, it's your own fault.

You can count on great service, a staff that treats you like one of the family, relaxation like I've seldom experienced, and horse riding in some of the most beautiful scenery the Ozarks has to offer.

Load up your boots and jeans (and some Advil... if you're not used to riding horses, you'll need it...) and make plans to spend some time at the ranch. You won't regret it.

Again, this place is at the top of a very long list of places that I will return to regularly.

  • Disliked — Leaving for home.
