“Lovely Bay, Shoddy Resort”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012

As for the room, the scuffed and scratched tile floor from the 1970s was dusty and peppered with beach sand. The tub and bathroom floor had coarse black hair from a previous guest spread about them. One of the bath towels had foundation or dried blood smeared on it. The closet doors, bedframes, and lampshades on the interior sides were covered in dust. The coffeemaker was dirty, dusty, and stained by mold. We were given no bathmat, a rust-stained ironing board with no iron, and a television but with no remote control.
We had asked for a non-smoking king room and received a twin with ashtrays. The shower would not produce hot water, merely lukewarm, and strangely seemed to emit a sewage stench after running for over 10 minutes. The already hideous floor was patched in one corner, revealing raw, unglazed concrete.
The entire complex reflected a mismanaged, neglectful sense of abandonment. The roofs of the guestroom buildings were drizzled with black soot. The paint on the exterior walls was being eaten away, the tiles around the pool and sea areas were scuffed, stained, and cracked in parts.
As for the buffet, there appeared to be only a few appealing options, however, after observing how the chef at the meat station was digging his tongs into a bowl of raw meat and using this same pair to place cooked meat on the guests’ plates, all food options lost their appeal. One would wonder if the Sosua Bay Resort has ever heard the word “hygiene” before.
This Resort has an excellent location and setting and has clearly benefited from an architect with an artistic eye and interest in quality, but it has been destroyed by mismanagement. The property is run-down and understaffed. Their standards for maintenance, cleaning, and customer service and sub-par. I only stayed one night at a discounted rate and still felt I was ripped off. I was only relieved to not have booked for longer. Other guests were not so fortunate.

“Some Staff Were Racist Towards Caucasian People - Therefore Only 1 Star”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 January 2012

There was an incident during dinner at the buffett restaurant in which I was at the front of the line directly in front of the cook. He refused to acknowledge my existance and the existance of other white people. He first served the Spanish speaking people and Dominican people. He also served the black Americans that were with Dominican friends. After all the Spanish speaking people had been served in the entire restaurant he then turned to me and asked me what I wanted. Needless to say I waited a very long time. This type of racism is not acceptable to me and that is the reason I am giving this hotel a 1 star rating. This is just one example of blatant racism that I encountered at this resort. Another time I went to the pool bar with the goal of getting a drink. The guy working at the pool bar also refused to acknowledge my existance for quite awhile while he chatting with his friend. Finally he asked me what I wanted and when I thanked him he said "Oh it's ok". I observed another white person experience the exact same treatment. Not all the staff were this bad and in fact there were some staff that were excellent. For instance the young lady that worked at the La Placita Bar provided excellent customer service and always with a smile.

There was a good variety of food at the buffet restaurant. However most of it did not look good to me and therefore I did not taste it. Instead I ate the food that was familiar to me such as pastas, fruit, etc. The breakfast at the buffet restaurant was delicious. It appears that the restaurant uses botttled water for its drinking water. I do not know if the ice is made from bottled water. I did not get sick during my stay there or afterwards.

The rooms were ok. I have stayed at this hotel before and I don't see any difference between the rooms at Sosua Bay Hotel and the Victorian House. If I were to book there again I would just go for the best deal. The shower had warm water some of the time and cold water at other times. Several times I took a cold shower. The bed was comfortable and the staff changed my sheets and made up my bed every day. The toilet broke during my stay there and the staff was quick to act and this was fixed the same day (before I had even told them about it).

The hotel is of good value if you are paying $50 per night. However it you are paying more than $80 per night then I think it would be of better value to stay at a cheaper non all-inclusive hotel and simply eat out at restaurants.

The best thing and I think the only thing good about this resort is the location because it has beautiful views of the ocean and of Sosua Bay. I had a good time at the resort. Because I experienced racism I rated this resort a 1 star but if I had not experienced racism I would have rated this resort between 2 and 3 stars. I did not feel comfortable complaining to anybody about what I observed and nobody at the resort asked me how my stay was (like they do at other resorts). What i can do though is inform others about my experiences at this resort and allow other people to make up their mind.

During my trip I observed only one roach in my room. The room comes with a fridge, microwave, electronic safe, and coffee maker. The fridge was never stocked.

What would make this a better resort is if the staff recieved extensive training in hotel management and customer service.

“If I go again I'll stay at Sosua Bay...but I probably won't”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 December 2011

I payed a tiny bit extra to stay here over Sosua Bay thinking there would be a difference. If there was I didn't notice. The rooms are the same but a little further from everything with the exception of the kids playground. Everything was nice the rooms were comfortable the pool was clean, the bartenders were friendly. I took advantage of the included snorkel rental and was amazed by all the sea life so close to the hotel. The food was average to below average. Luckily we only stayed for one night.

Room Tip: Pick a room in Sosua Bay it's cheaper and closer to everything you'll be using.

“Great place, we all loved it”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 July 2011

I spent 10 days with my husband, my mom, mother in law and my 18mo baby. We all had a blast. My husband and I spend most of our time scuba diving, the hotel has its own scuba place called superior dive, we got our advance open water certification there, it was a great experience, the staff, the places and the company were great. The hotel rooms were clean, service was excellent. The restaurant had good variety the staff was incredible nice, food was delicious, the 2 other restaurants were most of the time closed, the italian had a precious view and the food was good too. The pools and the beach were like prived except during the weekends when the locals visit the place. In general we had a great experience and for the price I would say that it was more than worth it. Is not a 5 star hotel but we knew that, so we were not expecting much and we were greatly surprised. I highly recommended.
