“A clean and friendly place”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 January 2012

Imagine what a hip and cool spot looked like circa 1989...Coconut Palms will give you that retro style with all the kindness you can possibly take. Judy who runs the hotel is always accessible, always curious what you think of your stay- the folks who work there have spent their adult lives employed at the Coconut Palm Hotel which says tons about the way employees are treated.
The rooms are simple and clean clean clean. They offer nothing special just a clean place to lay your head or hang out.
Noise: there is a bit of that. all the rooms circle the pool and bar and restaurant. so the place can get a bit lively but everything seems to quiet doen by 11pm.
Clientele: 50+ Canadian and Upstate NY folk, timesharers, working class or younger but not in the expendable money category.
It was a great place to start our trip, we had a combo pack with surf lessons from Chino's Surf School-this is a must! If you can read this, walk a little, then get on that surf board and let Chino's Surf School teach you the rest!

Room Tip: Try and ask for a room facing the ocean

“Not really in Cabarette”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 January 2012

Be sure to ask for a thrid floor room. The views of the ocean from the balacony are great. The pool was cold. Surprising because the ocean was like bath water. This is a very laid back resort with little activities. To really enjoy the area I would recommend renting a car (Just don't drive in Santo Domingo). The beach was a hike from the resort and the town was a couple of miles.

Room Tip: Ask for third floor ocean view

“Enjoyed every minute and surprisingly quiet for a North Coast Resort”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 December 2011

We (2 couples and a friend) stayed one week and really enjoyed the staff and the resort. Having traveled extensively throughout the DR, it was nice to have no surprises or unexpected problems. The area is very quiet and we had power the whole time. We stayed on the third floor and since it was Nov. 24 - Dec. 3 we had a nice breeze and windows were all we needed. We took a taxi into Cabarete and bought groceries since we had a kitchen and it was a lot more economical. Water pressure was a bit low in the showers but had plenty of hot water. We arrived on a Sat. and the hotel does not offer free shuttles into Cabarete until Tues. (I imagine so you will have to buy a meal package or at least eat at the restaurant a few times). We only ate one time at the restaurant and it was ok but the prices were very high for us ($21.00 US per person) since you can get a meal at Janets for about $4.50 US pp.
The resort is a little secluded so transportation can be an issue. Taxi drivers were willing to negotiate. ie: rented a taxi (van) for 5 people all day for $60.00 US and he took us where we wanted to go.

Room Tip: 3rd floor has better breezes

“We give it 5 out of 5, because we had a great time.”

We just finished a 6 week stay at the Coconut Palms and loved it. We would be very happy to return. But, as always, do your research and make sure it is right for you.

It is very clean and very friendly. The upper rooms, on the ocean side, provide an incredible backdrop for a dinner on the balcony. The rooms have two TV's and DVD players. There always were lots of towels. The WiFi is strong by the office.

The pool always has both a sunny spots and a shady spots. They have lots of pool furniture.

On the other hand....
The beach is a 1/2 mile walk away. There are no elevators. If you are fit, these are not a problem.

Our room did not have an air conditioner, but it had lots of windows with screens. The resort is on top of a hill, and there was always a breeze. We slept very well with fresh air and a distance sound of the ocean. We never heard and roosters or dogs.

Cabarete is 7km east. We walked there several times along the beach. All you need is strong legs and a strong sunblock. Walk down to the beach, turn right at the beach road. Follow it for 1/2 a mile, then down to the beach and on to town.

Many people ate at the Restaurant there, but that was not our thing.

The units have kitchens, but there are no groceries for sale. A Taxi to town is $12, each way.

A Carro is 20-25 pesos per person. This is a local taxi that drives a fixed route like a bus. It is in the form of an older Toyota Corrola, with a blue taxi sign on the roof. If you stand at the main road, they go by every 3 to 5 minutes. Just extend your arm and wiggle your finger. They (apparently) are only full when they hold 8 adults. Some drive rather crazy (like passing around corners with on coming traffic). To get groceries in Cabarette.... just say Janets. To get groceries in Sosua... say Supermarcado Playero. To get back just say.... Coconut Palms.

The resort is not to big. It is quiet and relaxed. Lots of staff speak English.

We give it 5 out of 5, because we had a great time.

Room Tip: Upper room facing ocean

“It was an incredible week!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 August 2011

I can't say enough about the people, service and food! The resort's a bit older, we're told renovations are planned, but we were moved to a room with air conditioning upon request and the service and food made up for the older amenities hands down! There is really no reason to eat anywhere else. The area was absolutely beautiful and the 10 minute walk to the beach was not bad at all and if you didn't want to walk a free ride was available. We took family pictures on the beach that turned about amazing. We would love to return for the fun and affordable area activities! If you are looking for a fun filled week in which you need old clothes, and water shoes this is the place! It's not for the spa seeker:) You'll need hand sanitizer, baby wipes and lots of OFF!
