“OK … could improve a few basic things to make it more than ok”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 August 2011

Not many options in the area. Location is ok but you have to find the sign to turn off the main road. Suggestion #1: get a newer sign and make it more visible. Hotel premises quite nice although on the simple side. Pool is nice. Rooms. OK but quite basic. Could use some basic decor. Suggestion #2: given that power is an issue, do provide 24 hour power via the available generator even if it means increasing the room rate by $10 or $15 a night. Not having power for part of the day, especially in the early evening, is not appropriate. Food: breakfast is ok but limited. Lunch menu is basically nil while supper menu is limited and very expensive. Suggestion #3: add more options to your menu and you will get people to actually eat at the restaurant. We ate most of our meals at Playa Azul 5 minutes away. Internet did not work the whole time we were there. We payed under $90 / night which is about right for what we got. No direct access to beach but a couple of pebble beach options 5 minutes walk from the hotel. Service was ok. Hotel is like a no frills. With some upgrade in overall service with an appropriate increase in cost, it can do much better. We will be back in the area but not at this hotel.

“Right off the ocean”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 April 2011

My friends and I really enjoyed our stay at this hotel. It is located on a cliff overlooking the ocean, with beautiful views. The grounds are very well maintained and beautiful. The staff was very helpful and we enjoyed the meals that we had at the on-site restaurant. Also appreciated the friendly dog that lives on the premises that greeted us whenever we returned. Our room was basic but clean. It had air-conditioning and hot water in the bathroom sink. One problem: ants! They were little brown ones; happily invading our room. This was not a big problem, just an inconvenience. Would stay here again.

“Great view, great value & near a great beach”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 January 2011

We stayed here for 3 nights and really enjoyed the stay. Our room was simple but very clean, had a/c and comfortable beds. No TV, but there is wifi in the hotel restaurant. The grounds have beautiful flowers and a great view of the ocean. The pool and restaurant are very nice. Every morning we had a breakfast (included in the price) of coffee, juice, fruit, toast and eggs. You are not direcly on the beach, but on a cliff overlooking it. You can easily walk 3-5 minutes down a path through the woods to reach a small, isolated beach. If you cross some rocks, you very quickly reach another small beach (though not as nice), and then after another short walk you reach a larger public beach. It is a max of ten minutes walking. The waters here are protected by rocks about 30 feet out in the water, so that you have a calm swimming and playing area. My boys loved climbing on the rocks and jumping into the water. The hotel is about 10-15 minutes south of the town of Barahona. There is a small colmado walking distance from the hotel where you can buy snacks and drinks. I really recommend this hotel if you are looking for a simple and relaxing break.

“A Perfect Getaway”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 December 2006

El Quemaito hotel is located about 10 km south of Barahona, on a cliff overlooking the sea. The hotel territory is not very large but very beautifully organized and maintained. There is a small swimming pool and plenty of space for chaises longues.

The hotel is located in a very scarcely populated area, so you can be sure you will not be disturbed by any signs of human presence outside the hotel. Beaches are scarce and pebbly in this part of the country, the nearest beach being about 5 minute drive away (we were told that it's about 10-15 minute walk but we never felt like trying).

There are no restaurants or other attractions within walking distance, but the owners offer delicious dinners made of fresh local products (ask for fish! :)

The hotel is owned and managed by a very nice Swiss couple, who only speak German and Spanish, so be prepared to some communication problems if you don't speak any of these languages. But I must say that the owners really did their best to understand and be understood, so that there were no real disappointments caused by the language barrier.

The room was quite comfortable, furniture and bathroom fixtures not luxury or brand new but in good working order.

Please note that there is no cell phone reception anywhere to the south of Barahona.
