“Avoid at all costs. Marriott should be ashamed.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 November 2011

I went to this hotel about five years ago, and was one of my very best stays ever, charming, great service, great food and such, we came year after year, but the quality dropped like a rock. My last stay before this one was two years ago, and I promised never come back.

I had to tho, since I only had one vacation day and Ixtapan is pretty close from Mexico City, but then I remembered how much I hated staying in this hotel, here's a small summary of the problems I had, same that were reported to Marriott on their survey:

Si pudiera describir el hotel en una palabra sería "mezquino". No se ofendan y sigan leyendo.

El hotel lo conocí hace cinco años y era algo muy cercano al paraíso, pero la calidad tanto de la estancia como de la comida ha ido cayendo a pasos agigantados. La última vez que fuí fue hace dos años y me había prometido no regresar. Por problemas en mi empresa solo me quedó libre este fin de semana y por la cercanía a México me hospedé con ustedes, solo para reafirmar mi disgusto.

- There is almost null noise insultation on the rooms. You'll hear everthing happening outside like if it was happening in your own room.

- Oh, you think Marriott will always honor that thing about the beds and pillows? Not in this hotel.

- When the hotel was really empty, I asked for six towels in one of the pools. They told me their policy was not to giver more than five. Then next day, they took OVER AN HOUR to give me four extremely old towels.

- They charge you about 15 USD per night for parking. Anyway, I forgot one thing in my car, when asked them to bring it, they told me to follow one guy, since it would be faster.

- The service in the room, they do it after 17:00…

- But, the day of the checkout, personel came 15 min. before checkout limit to inform me they were going to clean the room, so we have to leave, or they'll be forced to charge me another night.

- A bottle of water (500ml) costs about 2 USD, "for your own safety" you're not allowed to bring your water. Right.

- BEWARE about the tips in the restaurant. They are ALREADY included (10%), anyway, they'll encourage you add more tip thanks to a nice line that reads "Tip/Propina"

- Since this is a hotel that looks forward the use of green technologies, they'll turn off the boilers for the pools, so you can enjoy a really nice cold water.

- The mainteinance in the kids areas are nearly inexistant, some of them are very dirty, I reported this on friday, by sunday thay had done… nothing.

- Talking about kids, there's an area were your kids can draw, or illuminate things, a piece of paper and some colored pencil will cost you around 3 USD.

- TV didn't work, it had "ghosts" and the signal was interrupted frecuently.

- Maybe it was because they used TV over IP… that would explain why there wasn't wireless (WiFi) coverage in most of the hotel.

- If you want to have a nice breakfast, it must be monday, since they put in the buffet sunday's leftovers

Check the other comments, and if you can AVOID this hotel, you'll thank me.

“Not the Marriott we know and love”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 September 2011

When we pay nearly $200/night at a Marriott Hotel in a foreign country, we expect a certain level of service and quality. The Marriott Ixtapan was simply our worst Marriott experience in dozens of overseas Marriott stays. Yes, the pools are great and it's probably the nicest place to stay in Ixtapan, but don't arrive thinking you'll be staying at a "Marriott."

1. Service: Maid service was pretty abysmal. Floors weren't cleaned, TP wasn't renewed, given one tiny bottle of shampoo, one bar of soap, two towels and no conditioner for a family of four. When we called to get a little bottle of conditioner it took several minutes for them to figure out what we were talking about. After 15 minutes of waiting for it to show up, walked to the front desk where they said they didn't have conditioner. Finally, one of the bell hops walked by and offered to run and get some for us from the maid service room. All told, 45 minutes to get one bottle of conditioner.

2. Food: Food was Marriott prices, but the quality wasn't anywhere near it. Ordered pizza on our last night and got a pre-cooked cold crust with some semi-melted cheese and cold toppings. Steak the night before was like a piece of rubber. Local mexican fare on the menu was decent, but got better local food at the water park. I expect more from a Marriott.

3. Facilities (other than the pools which were great!): The entire hotel has tiled floors which lends itself to a very noisy hotel. Ceiling must be paper thin because you hear every step from the room above. General condition of the hotel is marginal to poor.

Marriott needs to look at quality control. A place like this hurts their brand.

If you're going to Ixtapan de la Sal, I guess this is the place to go, but do NOT expect Marriott quality.

Room Tip: Get a room facing away from the pool and bar if you want a measure of peace and quiet.

“Not a Marriott-quality hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 August 2011

The property is nice and the rooms are spacious and clean. Highly recommended for families with kids (don´t go there if you don´t want to see kids playing around and splashing in the pool!). However, the hotel lacks of the appropriate control systems. For example, when we tried to return the pool towels, the receipt that we signed when we got the towels in the morning was lost in the evening!! It also took us like 45-50 minutes to check out... huge line at the front desk!!! Noisy rooms too.
Personnel at the front desk very helpful and friendly.

“Very nice hotel for kids good value for money”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 March 2011

Marriott Ixtapan de la Sal was a good choice for traveling with kids. They have 3 pools. One of them with a pirate ship perfect for my kids. They also have kids club and a bunch of activities for them. The pool is a bit crowded. I think is better to travel during the week not on the weekend.
Food on the pool area is good and prices are ok. The price for the sunday brunch was expensive, its better to order from the menu.
Rooms are clean and beds are confortable. Rooms with pool view are a little noisy during the day.
I would recomend this hotel for families with young kids.
