Tagatay is about 50 km from Manila, which unfortunately means either an hour and 15 min or 3 hours depending on traffic. Taal volcano is the major attraction, but there are several good restaurants around, notably Antonio's which is not to be missed.
The Discovery Country Suites is off of one of the main roads around the rim of the Tagatay ridge and boasts a great view of the volcano. The rooms were clean and the whole place has kind of a country / mountain getaway sort of feel with regard to architecture and decor. We stayed in the Nantucket room which had both a queen and a king size bed, which was a bit odd, but was very spacious and had a nice deck and view.
The staff is a bit clueless overall. I wanted to change 500 pesos into 100's for tips and they couldn't break the bill - I could understand if I was trying to change a $100 USD note, but this is about $12. The restaurant, Verbena, has been written up a few places. It was OK, but didn't live up to expectations. Again, we were one of two tables in the place and couldn't get the waitresses attention to order or get refills of water. After mains were cleared, she cheerily went about changing the other tables over for breakfast - we had to interrupt that to get a desert menu. Maybe being a bit harsh - they were pleasant, just think a little more training is in order. It is the only time i've staid in Tagatay, so not sure what a comparison is to others around.
