“Nice Break from Manila”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 January 2012

Tagatay is about 50 km from Manila, which unfortunately means either an hour and 15 min or 3 hours depending on traffic. Taal volcano is the major attraction, but there are several good restaurants around, notably Antonio's which is not to be missed.

The Discovery Country Suites is off of one of the main roads around the rim of the Tagatay ridge and boasts a great view of the volcano. The rooms were clean and the whole place has kind of a country / mountain getaway sort of feel with regard to architecture and decor. We stayed in the Nantucket room which had both a queen and a king size bed, which was a bit odd, but was very spacious and had a nice deck and view.

The staff is a bit clueless overall. I wanted to change 500 pesos into 100's for tips and they couldn't break the bill - I could understand if I was trying to change a $100 USD note, but this is about $12. The restaurant, Verbena, has been written up a few places. It was OK, but didn't live up to expectations. Again, we were one of two tables in the place and couldn't get the waitresses attention to order or get refills of water. After mains were cleared, she cheerily went about changing the other tables over for breakfast - we had to interrupt that to get a desert menu. Maybe being a bit harsh - they were pleasant, just think a little more training is in order. It is the only time i've staid in Tagatay, so not sure what a comparison is to others around.

Room Tip: We didn't actually see any of the other rooms, but the rooms on the ground floor probably don...

“Cozy like home...”

Discovery Country Suites is a boutique hotel cozy like home.
The hotel staff are very friendly and accommodating, they give in to any request and always greet you with a smile... just like spending a night at a friend's house.
We stayed in one of the nicest room, The Siam is a Thai-inspired room located in the 1st floor, with 2 queen sized beds; a living room area, an office desk, and a huge bathroom. It has a sliding door that opens up to the garden with a jacuzzi.
What we love about this cozy hotel is that it pays attention to the smallest detail -- like serving heartwarming well-cooked food; serving cheeses with wine before sundown; hot milk and chocolate chip cookies for the kids before bedtime; a library of books, games, and DVDs; nice thick fluffy white towels; and of course the soft goose down pillows! My daughter also loves the big cookie jar at the reception area.
Aside from the jacuzzi, this hotel does not have amenities for sport & recreation. It is built after all like a big home away from home, just 7 rooms, it is a place for relaxation, a place of comfort, and big-time pampering!

“I would say the very best in Tagaytay, but at a price...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 November 2011

Country Suites has theme rooms of different cities/regions of the world. Nantucket for American, Oxford for English Tutor, Siam Thai, Nara Japanese, etc.
While I think the rooms are exceptional the Verbena restaurant isn't that special. To be honest nothing interests me on the menu. So I just get side orders and make my breakfast that way. It's kind of a disappointment because the place is so expensive. I usually go elsewhere for meals.
As I alluded to earlier the rooms are exceptional. I've stayed in nearly all of them. Each has a small bed for children and the beds are king sized. The linens are 600 thread count type quality. The Oxford is almost a whole house full of furniture in the room, with exception of the kitchen. It has a whirlpool spa looking out with a nice view. His and hers sinks and amenities.

This is a swanky place is the best way to say it and a memorable experience.
They have a DVD collection if you want to checkout a movie. Books as well if I recall.
The staff is good until 11pm and you should arrive earlier in the evening as the management for checking in and out are not on-site from late hours to early hours. So checking out early for a 7am flight should be arranged in advance. The people you deal with are concierge level personnel.
Overall, if money is not the care in your world, then you can't stay at a place better than this in Tagaytay.

“Mini Break”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 October 2011

My husband, the kids and I just got back from a short and much deserved break in Tagaytay. For those who do not know, Tagaytay is a city in the province of Cavite- only 55 km (34 miles) away from Manila. It's known for its cooler (than Manila) weather, tons of buko pies and the wonderful views of Taal Lake.

I have always avoided heading towards Tagaytay during long weekend and holidays simply because it gets way too crowded. However, my kids' school break started earlier than most schools so we found ourselves high tailing it to Tagaytay for an overnight trip before life got hectic again.

Thru hotels.com, I got us a good deal at the Discovery Country Suites. For around P15,000 (USD 350), I got us two suites (so my husband and I could sleep undisturbed- the kids got a room of their own) complete with breakfast of our choice. It was sweet!

I loved the spacious, airy lobby and the nice view from the restaurant (Verbena). The high wooden ceiling gave it a very cosy yet elegant vibe. It didn't hurt that they had free Wine and Cheese tasting the evening we checked in. They also took care of booking a dinner reservation for us at Antonio's. They were always very respectful and unobtrusive. I am definitely going back!

Discovery Country Suites is probably one of the older luxury hotels in Tagaytay. You could tell that the property is old. The rooms had a musty smell to them and the bathrooms needed some updating. BUT I am not such a picky traveller. What makes the difference for me is the service and the level of comfort that a hotel gives. In that area, Discovery Country Suites exceeded my expectations.

My husband and I stayed at the Nara Suite. Inspired by Japan's first capital, the suite was decorated to look like a Tatami room. The bed is on an elevated platform (See photo below) and the room is shut off from the rest of the world with wooden SOJI sliding doors. However, unlike most Japanese Tatami rooms, this one was really spacious. There was even room for an extra daybed.

The kids stayed at the Siam suite. This room was 55 sqm of divine comfort- complete with 2 queen sized beds- and opened up to a colorful tropical garden. It was kept immaculately clean but I must say, the pillows need a good wash. I instructed the kids to take them off the bed because it could trigger some bad allergies.

I would definitely recommend this hotel to couples or families with young children who want to take a quick break.

Room Tip: Choose rooms at the basement. It has easy access to the garden and pool.
