After a non-stop morning's cycling we ended up in new Bagan hungry and thirsty. The Lonely Planet and Tripadvisor both recommended The Green Elephant. So we stopped there first. Lovely garden setting and wonderful views over the Ayeyarwaddy River. However food choices were uninspiring and expensive ... no wonder as almost all of the tables were reserved for large tour groups. So a good place for a beer and that's it. Asking at a couple of guesthouses both recommended Mar Lar Theingi in town. It ended up being our best meal in Bagan.
After a warm and friendly welcome by the staff (and alter the owner) our table quickly filled up with a myriad of small plates and bowls of all of the local specialties, with an emphasis on curries (some delicious, a few an acquired taste, but none modified for Western palates). Whenever one was close to running out, it was quickly refilled. In the end we had to beg them to stop bringing food! All this for the princely sum of 3,500 kyat per person ($4).
