booked the hotel through c-trip,com, going to Datong was sort of an adventure for me coz this was only my 3rd time on a train in China, & my 1st trip sleeping overnight on a train, it was a relief being able to check into the hotel early in the morning then going back to the train station where I took the China Travel's 1 day tour to the amazing Hanging Monastery & Yungang Grottoes (I know lots of other Chinese destinations get a lot more press but HM & YG are truly wonderful places to visit)
the hotel rooms were decent enough, I still took a shower wearing my own flip flops but that' my own kink, having spent the few nights immediately before at the Peninsula in Beijing, the Hua Yuan was good value for money and not too much of a drop in comfort
didn't eat in the hotel coz the hotel is pretty central with lots of restaurants and other choices in the area. The hotel is definitely in the nicer part of Datong and close by the sights (65 km to hanging monastery), walking distance to 9 dragon screen, shan hua temple, Hua Yan temple, & 16 km to Yungang grottoes)
also the best cab drivers from the sbame co hang out in front of the hotel (much better than the scary ones that hang around outside Datong train station)
