“Say ' Good Night ' to the buffalos”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

Why the title ? Because as soon as it got dark the buffalos came to our lodge eating the gras between the huts ! Askaris guarded us when returning to the room. What a feeling !
we spent 2 nights at the Ng.Crater Lodge, in room no. 11, located at the north-camp.
The ' villa ' was made out of 2 huts with palmleave/straw roofs. Outside looks like a native habitat and inside a touch of french interior.
The main hut was the bedroom with a sitting area which had a fireplace closed with a glasdoor.
At nighttime, when we had dinner, the service lit the wood and our 'home' became very cosy and warm. You think you don't need it there ? Pls. note that the crater rim has an altitude of about 2300m, it can get fresh at night ! the smaller hut was our bathroom with a free-standing tub and a large shower, the light came from a crystal lamp. One night housekeeping prepared our bath with lots of roses, in the tub, before and at the rim. Beautiful and romantic.
Meals could be ordered in the room or go to the main building. Lovely lounge, where there is free wifi ( the only place ) and dining room. The food was good.
Details to know: from the Manyara Airstrip to the Lodge is about a 1.5 - 2h drive, from the Lodge into the Crater is about 1h drive, change of altitude 620m.
the safari cars are only allowed to drive on the dirt roads means some animals you will see only from far ( like rhinos ) and the place is popular, there a times were it seem to have more cars then animals ( overstated but feels like it), the NP is open from 6am to 6pm. We had our last drive in the afternoon staying as long as possible because the sunlight stated to turn golden and it was such a difference to the full sun during the day.

Room Tip: the Crater Lodge has 3 camps, North-, South- and Tree camp. We stayed in the North camp in Room No...

“luxury by all means”

I spent one night in ngorongoro crater lodge on Jan,2012. I was in a safari trip with my family in Tanzania. The lodge was very comfortable, warm and luxurious. The staff were more than helpful and extremely friendly. The food was super and very delicious. At night they put on the fire place in our room which made it worm and nice so we slept like babies . Next day when we came back from the game drive we found the bath fixed for us with bubbles and red roses around. Our stay in this lodge made the magnifisant trip to Tanzania very unique and special. I strongly advice ngorongoro visitors to try crater lodge. It was worth it every penny.

Welcome to Leaving was Perfection.

Walking to dinner past a grazing Zebra and her foal was magical!

I can't really add to the other reviews except to say you MUST go there at least once in your life.

Room Tip: Closer to the rim is best...

“Awesome”

Stayed here for 2 nights. We had a beautiful room with a view of the crater.
I celebrated my b-day here . The chef baked a chocolate cake for me. The staff sung (Swahili) & dance and the rest of the guests joined too. A birthday celebration I will never forget!!
Game viewing was great. We started before sunrise and the kitchen packed a picnic breakfasts for us. We had breakfast facing the lake where the hippo's live. It was a chilly morning & it felt good to drink that good hot coffee . We saw lots of wildlife.
The cold & hot water in the shower was hard to regulate but we made sure we mentioned it to our butler so that they can correct it. We wonder if they did bec. of the reaction of the butler. It was also mentioned to the assist . manager.
Overall friendly staff. They all work hard!!!!!!!!!!

Room Tip: a room close to the reception area

“Extravagant!”

Amazing views, luxurious rooms and exemplary service. Ngorongoro Crater Lodge is undoubtedly the most upscale lodge in all of Tanzania. You'll be pampered from the moment you arrive, complete with your own personal butler.

While some people might find the Crater Lodge to be over-the-top in its opulence, it's a great place to take a break and relax in the middle of a long African journey, and that's exactly what we did. We stayed here for 2 nights between our time in the Northern Serengeti and Selous Game Reserve. To say we managed to successfully re-charge here would be an understatement.

The game drive in the crater is terrific - a wide variety of ecosystems can be found in the crater, resulting in a wide variety of game. It's truly a beautiful place. That said, the Crater is far more crowded with vehicles compared to other places we visited in Tanzania - it felt like being at Disneyland of Animals. Nonetheless, it's spectacular and beautiful, and definitely worth a visit for a day or two.

It's not cheap, but well worth a visit for a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience.
