The best reason to stay at this hotel is the location, about 5 minutes from the International airport. I've stayed here before several times and this time I stayed both before and after a northern circuit safari.

Plus: complimentary transfers to/from the hotel from nearby JRO; great view of Kilimanjaro - should she chose to show herself; pleasant gardens and great birds; nice rooms with lots of luggage area and a writing desk, good shower and hot water quality; decent service.

Minus: on both ends of the safari I found lots of rubbish laying around outside the rooms, a big negative for me; the rooms are airless and the a/c is pretty unreliable; the food is average at best but adequate.

If you expect an average place that's very convenient to the airport you won't be disappointed.

Room Tip: Some rooms have better views of Kili, you can request one of these.

“Very convienient to the airpot”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 January 2012

We staeyed there for only one night before we left Tanzania. the property is located very close to the Kilimanjaro airport so it is a natural stop. The property itself is very nice with a lots of beautiful flowers and trees around, idividual houses, and a view of Kilimanjaro. Rooms were clean and very comfortable, staff was nice. The place has a very nice bar with free wifi. The only issue was the food,w hich wasn't particularly good.

“A great way to spend that extra night before you fly”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2012

After two weeks in Tanzania, it was time to move onto South Africa. We had a spare night, so just decided to stay near the airport because we had a 6am flight.

I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of this lodge. The rooms were spacious and very clean and sweet smelling, the facilities were well kept and the staff were very helpful and friendly.

The food wasn't the best, however the food we had been eating in the previous two weeks was quite basic, so it was a welcome change.

I have rated this quite high, as I'm comparing it to other places we stayed in Arusha. In comparison, it was very nice.

It's also very convenient for transferring to the airport. The staff organize this for you, not matter what time it is.

“Close to Kilimanjaro airport, but disappointing overall experience”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 January 2012

After spending 8 days traveling through out Tanzania, we spent our final night at the Kia Lodge, before flying out of Kilimanjaro airport at 6 am the following day. Our tour operator set up this hotel for us, as the alternative appeared to be to stay in Arusha (~45 minute drive). Since we had to be at the airport before 5 am, we opted for the closer, but more expensive option with the Kia Lodge. We paid $145 USD per person, for the night, which did not include dinner. The hotel did provide a breakfast box and a free shuttle to the airport, which was nice.

We found the food to be nicely presented, but we had trouble eating much of any of it. As mentioned, we were in Tanzania for 8 days in similar locations and never had any trouble with food at the other locations.

The free wi-fi in the bar area was a nice perk. The entire staff was extremely friendly, I think it was just a bit unfortunate that the cost was so high and the food was lacking.

As another guest mentioned, the bugs in the rooms seemed to be an issue. While it may seem silly to comment on bugs in Tanzania, we also made it 8 days with very few bug bites, but after leaving the Kia Lodge, we managed to find over 20 each on our feet. Maybe we should have sprayed more in the room and on ourselves, but I thought it was worth mentioning, as other reviewers had a similar issue.

“More charm and convenience than I'd expected”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 December 2011

I was expecting a soulless cement block, and found individual huts set in lovely grounds. It was poorly lit at night, though, so do bring a torch.

The pleasant open bar area had wi-fi, and proper coffee. In the room, the shower was functional, and the supply of hot water was good. The bed was fairly comfortable, but the use of duvets made it difficult to remove layers during the night - it wasn't hot enough to merit airconditioning, but there was no middle way. The wake-up call worked, and the airport shuttle bus was ready promptly. People manning the reception were friendly. I didn't eat or swim at the hotel.

It was better than I'd expected, but also over-priced for what it offered.
