“A later day Garden of Eden?”

Bird Island is remarkable . There cannot be many places on the planet where men, beasts, birds and fish live in such peaceful harmony. Giant tortoises are free to amble about the island, Birds nest on the ground and in the numerous trees, and don't mind at all if you approach them carefully to take a really close-up photo. Robby the resident naturalist gathers the sea turtle eggs, incubates them protected from predators, then when they hatch, launches them down the beach into the sea. This way very many lives of this delightful species are saved. We snorkled alongside a trio of large stingrays. They didn't mind at all!

The accomodation is comfortable but not luxurious. The individual cabins are laid out on either side of the main lodge with ample space between them to ensure privacy. The many birds can make it a bit noisy, especially at roosting time and as the sun rises, but our sleep was never disturbed. If you get up early enough you will find Marie-France, the owner of the island, sweeping and dusting the hotel reception area. She walks round her island every day to make sure that all is as it should be. The staff are charming, smiling and happy to help guests make the most of their visitt. The food is deliciously simple, maiinly creole in style, with fresh fish straight out of the sea served on most days. Once we had adjusted to the very gentle and slow pace of life we became completely relaxed. A week here is a better cure for stress than any doctor could perscribe Marie-France has got the ambiance just right- the garden of Eden without snakes nor the tree of temptation.

“Wonderful island for a true nature experience”

Our second trip to Bird and it is really an amazing place to get away to. As expected loads of birds nesting, tortoises, turtles and great fishing by hand! My two boys pulled the fish from the water on a string. Wonderful clear water to swim. If you are looking for luxury then that is not Bird but if you want to walk around the most beautiful island in two hours then you will not be disappointed. Accommodation basic and the food is the best home-made you could find. Very friendly and helpful staff.

“Bird Island has ruined my pastime!”

No longer will I be able to enjoy birdwatching. It will take too much effort. On Bird Island you have close up encounters with a multitude of fearless birds even without binoculars, the exception being the magnificent Fregates.
The energetic and enthusiastic owner, Marie France, was on hand to give advice and update guests as to new turtle nesting sites.
Robbie's nature tours are unmissable. He has a passion for this island's wildlife and plantlife.Without him we would have overlooked the Tropicbird nests only feet away from our bungalow verandah, likewise the Fairy Tern(sorry Robbie, I mean White Tern) incubating an egg inches away from our side shutter.
Other highlights were swimming with a green turtle, shooting stars, magnificent sunsets and the Creole lunchtime buffets

“The closest you'll ever get to being Robinson Crusoe”

Stunning small island in the middle of the Indian Ocean, 30 minutes flight from Mahe. Simple but effective rooms, superb attentive service, unbelievably fresh fish for lunch and dinner, reasonable prices at the bar considering the location. Highly recommended if you want some time away from it all - just take some earplugs if you're a light sleeper - the bird song can get loud at night.

There were only two things I'd be able to improve upon: more variation at breakfast (it's eggs and fruit every morning) and some sun loungers dotted around the island to truly relax on the stunning beaches.

“Paradise island and lodge for those who love nature”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 August 2010

Great arrival onto the grass landing strip sets the scene for a wonderful stay. Warm personal greeting from owner. When we stayed most people were only staying 1 night - we stayed 3 and this really gave us a feel for the place. We have been on several safaris and love wildlife watching - perhaps if you are only slightly interested in this 1 night might be enough just to experience staying on a coral island with fantastic beaches (continuous around all the island) and amazingly turquoise coloured seas.

We filled our time bird watching, snorkeling, looking for turtles (in august not best time but saw tracks, heads popping out of water and glimpses while snorkeling ), star gazing. photography, looking for the elusive Esmeralda and beach combing. The lodge usually offers a nature walk - though Robbie the resident naturalist highly spoken of by other posters was not there when we were but we had an excellent walk with the owners nephew a marine biologist. You can go deep sea fishing for a morning but this is expensive at 240 euros per boat.

The chalets are wonderful, simple and comfortable with slatted wooden windows and roofs that dont come down to the walls so plenty of air circulation (no air cons thankfully). Be prepared to share your room with Geckos and the outside eaves with Noddy Terns. In August dont expect a quiet nights sleep with the background noise of the sooty terns but if you stay more than one night you get used to this.

Food was generally good to very good buffet creole cooking with very friendly staff (some of whom have lived for years on the island). Drinks considering the location were not that expensive with wine at 20 euros and beer 3.5 euros.

We also stayed on Praslin and Mahe but this was by far the highlight of our holiday. This must have been one of the first "eco" lodges anywhere with great vision from the owners and continued commitment to this. No other lodge like it in seychelles unfortunately.

We hope to return someday during peak turtle season.
