“Tiwi Beach - Never again !!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 March 2006

For a last minute booking and our 7th trip to Kenya, we could not book into our favorite hotel Southern Palms (not suprised as it is a wonderful hotel)

Tiwi Beach Hotel was a disappointment right from the start. There was no proper greeting on arrival except by the porter. The rooms were quite nice, clean but scruffy, with a good balcony overlooking the pool. The bar staff were sullen and inatentive and not proactive at all. At times they were VERY overworked.

This holiday was All Inclusive or so we thought. Water was dispensed at the bar only a glass at a time - not a bottle, even to take to our rooms. I filled up a plastic bottle and was told off. Lots of water is a must in a hot climate so we just had to buy water (at top hotel prices of course). It cost 17 GB Pounds for a round trip to Diani Shopping Centre. The hotel advertises a curtesy coach but that cost 16 GB Pounds !!!! (SOME CURTESY)

As well as the Buffet Tiwi boasts an Italian, a Chinese and an Indian restaurant (plus a Seafood one where you pay extra) The brochure dosn't say that they are each open only 2 days a week and if you are A.I. you only have a set menu with NO choice at all.
This type of All Inclusive with the wrist band changes your relationship with waiters, bar staff - we felt like second class citizens. They were very quick to serve the Non A.I. first.

If you like walking there is only the beach as the Hotel is 2 miles down a rough dirt track and there are danger warnings not to wander outside. The hotel safari trips etc. were VERY costly. Try DM Tours in Diani Shopping Centre. Denis Moser charges 40% less than the reps. Serena in the Mara was just wonderful.

The food seem monotonous and VERY boring after the first few days. The breakfasts were poor quality. The eggs, which had nearly white yolks, and coffee tasted of nothing at all. Same things day after day. The salad starters were the same each day too, though were very plentiful. Waiters in the dining room were quite good fetching water, wine & beer etc.

We enjoyed some of the entertainment in the evenings which was held mainly outside.

The beach was nice white sand but very rocky underfoot; the sea was full of seaweed. The pool was very big and it was hard to find help with matresses for sunbeds. We mostly had to ask a gardener to fetch them from the basement (they did appreciate the tips though)

This is a Hotel that we will NEVER EVER go to again

“An unimpressive all-inclusive”

We have just returned for a week spent at the hotel. In terms of location there is absolutely no opportunity to leave the hotel unless you are on one of their organised trips. The rooms are relatively clean, but as another person mentioned there are dated. The staff were sometimes attentive but at other times disinterested. The food was extremely average to say the least. Ultimately you get what you pay for and it was pretty inexpensive, but certainly don't expect any authenticity or impressive cuisine at the hotel.

“Good 4* star hotel”

We have visited the Tavellers Tiwi twice, and this hotel offers fantastic food choices and a fantastic beach. The hotel has a section of beach about 250 meters long with its own sun beds and Italian Restaurant right on the beach with the best view.

If you step off the hotels section of beach you do get a bit of hassle from the locals trying to sell you everything and anything, but they soon give up when you say no. I never felt unsafe on the beach on my own. If you like the beach this is a great hotel for you, you can walk along the beach for miles and only pass the odd person.

Don't expect to leave the hotel, unless on an excursion or a walk on the beach.

Both times weve been, we have had a free 2 day trip to the elephant scantary, which is a must and you get to see load of elephants of all ages.

“Excellent relaxing 2 weeks”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 January 2005

Just back from 2 weeks over New Year 2004. This is a really good all-inclusive hotel for Kenya. The hotel wasn't very full when we were there - this ensured you could get a sun-bed anytime of the day and it was all very relaxing.

The food choices are very good. The main buffet restaurant was the usual all-inclusive fare. The speciality nights were very good - especially the chinese and the italian ones. There are other a la carte restaurants which you can book on all-inc basis. You can then either go all-inc with the set menu or pay and choose from the a la carte. We did both - indian and chinese restaurants. There is also a very nice italian on the beach - we had both lunch and dinner at this one - looking out to sea was fantastic. We 'found' the snack bar for lunch after a few days. This served burgers, chips, toasted sandwiches and we liked having lunch here as you get served and it's outside and by the pool. Service is good. You just need to book near the Reception for the a la cartes. They didnt open everyone every night - but you could always get in when we were there.

Rooms are clean but a bit dated. The air con didn't work as good as we have known in other hotels - but there was a ceiling fan as well if you could stand the noise. Had a tv and a safe - ours overlooked the top pool.

There were 2 pools connected by a 'river'. We found the top one the quiet one for relaxing during the day - complete with swim-up pool bar. The bottom one was where for children and a bit more lively.

We flew to the Masai Mara for a safari - which was well worth it but more expensive.

We also used the Baracuda diving centre on the beach. All very organised and totally safe.

I used the Internet cafe a bit - which was ok but a bit slow as you would expect.

We didn't venture from the hotel other than the diving and the safari. We both had coughs and colds off and on - so we took it easy. There are a number of excursions you can go on if you want to see a bit more of the local attractions.

As we were there for New Year - they really put on a good evening with a live band and all of the tables set out in a large garden area we didn't know was there until the evening. The chefs brought out a really large cake and it was very entertaining. They cancelled the fireworks in support of the Tsunami victims and we had a minute's silence - which I thought was well done.

A great holiday.
