For a last minute booking and our 7th trip to Kenya, we could not book into our favorite hotel Southern Palms (not suprised as it is a wonderful hotel)
Tiwi Beach Hotel was a disappointment right from the start. There was no proper greeting on arrival except by the porter. The rooms were quite nice, clean but scruffy, with a good balcony overlooking the pool. The bar staff were sullen and inatentive and not proactive at all. At times they were VERY overworked.
This holiday was All Inclusive or so we thought. Water was dispensed at the bar only a glass at a time - not a bottle, even to take to our rooms. I filled up a plastic bottle and was told off. Lots of water is a must in a hot climate so we just had to buy water (at top hotel prices of course). It cost 17 GB Pounds for a round trip to Diani Shopping Centre. The hotel advertises a curtesy coach but that cost 16 GB Pounds !!!! (SOME CURTESY)
As well as the Buffet Tiwi boasts an Italian, a Chinese and an Indian restaurant (plus a Seafood one where you pay extra) The brochure dosn't say that they are each open only 2 days a week and if you are A.I. you only have a set menu with NO choice at all.
This type of All Inclusive with the wrist band changes your relationship with waiters, bar staff - we felt like second class citizens. They were very quick to serve the Non A.I. first.
If you like walking there is only the beach as the Hotel is 2 miles down a rough dirt track and there are danger warnings not to wander outside. The hotel safari trips etc. were VERY costly. Try DM Tours in Diani Shopping Centre. Denis Moser charges 40% less than the reps. Serena in the Mara was just wonderful.
The food seem monotonous and VERY boring after the first few days. The breakfasts were poor quality. The eggs, which had nearly white yolks, and coffee tasted of nothing at all. Same things day after day. The salad starters were the same each day too, though were very plentiful. Waiters in the dining room were quite good fetching water, wine & beer etc.
We enjoyed some of the entertainment in the evenings which was held mainly outside.
The beach was nice white sand but very rocky underfoot; the sea was full of seaweed. The pool was very big and it was hard to find help with matresses for sunbeds. We mostly had to ask a gardener to fetch them from the basement (they did appreciate the tips though)
This is a Hotel that we will NEVER EVER go to again
