“Very, very disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 January 2012

My wife and I stayed here for 2 weeks in January 2011.We stayed all inclusive which on the face of it looked good value compared with the half board tariff. The first disappointment was the couldn't care less, surly attitude of the barstaff at the 'all inclusive bar' The drinks were 'thrown' into plastic glasses and, all but, thrown across the bar to us.
Our room was spartan but luckily we had a fantastic houseboy who kept our room spotless and well supplied with all the essentials.
The food was OK. Nothing special but not awful either.
The most distressing occurrence was the pools (x3) which all developed a disgusting algae problem about 4 days before our departure. They became a green, cloudy mess which nobody could bring themselves to enter. The pool attendant told us that they were not going to carry out any treatment as the hotel was just about to close for a major refurbishment.
We expressed our displeasure at reception and were told that all complaints would be addressed by the management. We left for home 4 days later having heard no comments from the management. It is to be hoped that their major refurbishment also rectifies the issues we experienced.

“Holiday of a lifetime”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 November 2011

This was the best ever holiday and the hotel Sun N Sand was fabulous, brilliant staff and food was great. Location was beautiful overlooking the Indian Ocean and the Kikambala beach. Went to the Floating Restaurant in Mwapa Creek and it is fabulous, had lobster and champagne.

“Apart from the airport experience, I couldn't really fault it!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 October 2011

Stayed in Nov '10. Booked with Thomson, great value for money.
Flight out was good, mombasa airport is a nightmare tho but wen we finally got thru, transferred and to the hotel u couldn't fault it. Quick check in and cold drink on arrival. Basic rooms but had everything u need. Staff do expect to be tipped if they help u tho.
Just relaxed for the first week. Went on the tsavo east/west safari for three days the next week. Totally amazing. Hard going and very hot at times but an experience il never forget!
Food in hotel was ok, better on the days a new plane was due in to b honest but u wudnt go hungry.
Pools wer fab, porters around the pool wer great. Animation team worked their socks off. Only downside was the fact u got accosted if u tried to go the beach by the men who want to show u around.
Going home I'd definitely book the VIP in the airport. Because its so hot with rubbish ceiling fans that do nothing and when the flights delayed its very unpleasant! Getting frisked before boarding the plane also isn't pleasant but that's their ways I suppose. All in all I'd definitely go back!

“wonderful laid back holiday”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 September 2011

We stayed here for two weeks in December last year, including Christmas. It was an almost last minute decision and one of the best we have made. Yes, the hotel is old and in need of a make-over, but it was just wonderful. Even though it was school holiday time it did not have an overcrowded feeling. The rooms are fine. Basic but all you need. Bathroom was large. The service is excellent, and feel sorry that so many of them are now out of work because of the closure. Originally it was going to be up and running again by Christmas this year, but obviously not. The food was good. The Christmas pudding was wonderful! Have to admit we had extra portions of this. Pool staff, very good. Each morning loungers were laid out with towels for us. Nothing was too much trouble for them. Yes we did tip, but only beacuse we had good service from them. The beach was a bit of a let down as it had quite a lot of debris and seaweed, but that is not the hotels fault. We have never swum in such warm water as the Indian Ocean! Would we return? Yes, if they every open again as all inclusive. Which I doubt very much.
