“The Paradise is your best option for Vava'u!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 September 2007

This was out third stay at the Paradise over an eight year period and it was nice to be welcomed back by the friendly staff.
Bad points - It's an old hotel, built sometime in the 70's so many of the rooms are beginning to show signs of wear and tear. The hotel IS being renovated slowly on a room-by-room basis (with the Harbour-view rooms coming last - ask when you reserve your room). The swimming pool needs new chairs and sun beds. The breakfast was fine BUT dinner is probably best eaten outside the hotel (very limited menu choice and quite expensive compared to restaurants in the town - this needs to be rethought by the hotel)
Good points - Huge rooms (Harbour view) and gorgeous gardens. Convenient pick up for whale watching and scuba diving. The swimming pool is quite clean (The one at the Pua hotel is completely unuseable!) The staff are friendly (admittedly they do make mistakes - like with taking messages but the manager is doing her best with a staff training programme). The Paradise does have its faults but is by far and away the best place to stay in Vava'u.

“Great setting”

We stayed at this hotel since there are not a lot of other choices. The rooms are large, we had a balcony with a great view and there is a dock where you can be picked up directly to go whale watching or diving. The room was clean, had a good sized refrigerator and a good shower. It was about a 10 minute walk to restaurants or a $2 taxi ride into town.

On the bad side, the drapes hung down and were ripped. The bedspread was also faded and torn. The carpet was well worn. The staff was clueless. I asked them to verify my flight for the following day and she handed it back and told me to do it at the airport the next day when I checked in! The breakfast is included, but they were always out of dishes, silverware, glasses, eggs, etc. When you would ask them to bring something they would bring 2 when there were 10 people in line. I ordered a Mai Tai and I could not identify what it was-not drinkable, but probably my fault for ordering it.

If you stay here, keep your sense of humor. This is Tonga and you can't expect what you get at home.

“Whales in Vava'u”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 August 2007

Returned from a one week stay in Vava'u a week ago. Went with a group of divers as a non diver intending to do as much of nothing as possible. I was successful! and enjoyed the down time very much. The Paradise Hotel is set in lovely grounds with views that are magnificent. We had the buffet breakfast which is served from 6.30 til 10am, very good, and garden view rooms.

Unfortunately my stay was not a good one. The Hotel was built in the 1970s as I understand it and the rooms that I stayed in may well have been untouched since the time of building. If this Hotel puts some money into maintenance it can return to a standard that could live up to its setting. I stayed in 106 for 2 nights but the shower didn't work so was moved to 108 where the shower worked but ... I won't bore you with details. I think it fair to say that this could be a great place to say in the right room.

The 1 day Whale Watch Tour with Dolphin Pacific Diving was good, not really a boat person but felt safe to be out on the water with these people and on a deep hulled boat. I hadn't snorkled before and recommend that before you have some experience before you swim with the Whales so you can keep up with the group in the water. I ended up watching from the boat and still enjoyed my day as the guys also took us to a place called the "Mushroom"? where we were able to snorkle in a relaxed way.

“Excellent service and ambience at reasonable prices”

We recently chose the Paradise Internation Hotel to recover from jet lag after several long flights, beginning in Vancouver and ending in Vava'u. Two days of relaxation and sight seeing was just the ticket before beginning our sailing charter with The Moorings.

From the receptionist to the cleaning staff, everyone was friendly and helpful. The room was clean and air conditioned, our balcony had a splendid view of the harbour, the grounds were beautifully maintained, and the breakfasts were superb (eggs made to order was a nice touch).

A swim-up bar would be nice, but we pretty much had that on our sailing charter!

Thanks to everyone at Paradise for a great start to our holiday.

“For the Wrong Reasons!”

I am a travel agent and was on a business trip to Vava'u when our domesic flight back to Tongatapu was cancelled so we had to stay in Vava'u for a further 2 nights! This meant we were put up in Harbour View Rooms at the Paradise at the airlines expense. Was great and exeded my expectations! Large rooms, great restaurant and great facilities. Also has a good location being about a 10 minutes walk into town.
