“A long way from Paradise. Find somewhere else to stay.”

Stayed in The Paradise Hotel for 9 nights from August 10-19th 2009. This was 9 nights too long. The hotel was probably once quite nice but lack of maintenance & repairs combined with an extensive fire in 2008 to the reception, restaurant & bar area have left it in a very poor state (see attached photos).

Our package included breakfast but as there is no kitchen or restaurant this is not possible. All meals require a 10-15 minute walk to the cafes & restaurants in the nearby town.

Rooms are large enough but very tired. No bedside lights, no working ceiling fan and a noisy over-door style air-conditioner that required standing on a chair to turn on or off. The room was clean if you didn't look under the bed. Daily service was performed by friendly staff but on most days they took the towels and did not replace them. A small bar fridge was a useful item although this was also very old & rusted. It's location in one side of the wardrobe made it impossible to open or close the wardrobe doors.

The bathroom was clean but very old & damp. No working hot water tap in either the shower or hand-basin, no plugs, no exhaust fan, no clothes-line, no bin & no little bottles of toiletries. A large bar of bath soap was provided on arrival and quite new looking towels available for the asking from the laundry room; just a shame they weren't left in the room. The water pressure on most days made hair washing a challenge. We were also subjected to intervals where there was no power and no water in the room.

The location of this hotel is good as everything is within walking distance and there is a nice view of the ocean from the front rooms. The garden rooms are subject to road noise & barking dogs and do not have a view.

There is no beach at The Paradise Hotel and the pool was so dirty it was unusable.

“Very Tired”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 September 2008

Arrived with a work group and stayed 2 nights. The hotel is showing its age. Must have been great in its early days but now age has caught up with it. My room had hot water but some of the group did not have hot water and their rooms were musty. They moved to better rooms for the second night.
Only 3 pool chairs and one was broken! The swimming pool had only been recently cleaned in honour of the coronation.
Rooms are over priced for what they are compared with similar rooms in NZ.
Best to get a waterview room if you can as these are better.
Breakfast was adequate and plenty of it. Like must things in Tonga the finer points are often missed. There were linen tablecloths and napkins but the juice was made from a packet. The milk and juice jugs were all chipped around the top.!
Considered to be one of the better hotels in Vavau, hate to see what the others are like!

“Wouldn't go back”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 September 2008

We stayed there for 1 night in late August 2008. Overall we didnt think it was worth the money and would not want to go back.

The positivies were:
The airport shuttles were included, Breakfast was included (although it was not very nice) and the view from the Harbour view room was fantastic.

The negatives were:
It was overpriced, the air conditioning was way too loud so couldnt sleep with it on which meant we still couldnt sleep cos it was too hot, the pool (which is what attracted us to book there) was a funny colour and you couldnt see the bottom so we swam at the jetty instead and the phone didnt work.

We werent expecting much but we felt like the quality you get here is the same as cheaper places so why pay the extra?

“139.5 USD and no hot water in room”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 August 2008

We hadn't hot water in room in spite of two plumbs interventions. The Hotel didn't want to refund something and told us that the bus to airport would be free specially for us. But the airport transfers is complementary for all customers.
Thank you for the lied deal.

“Huge room and great view”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 July 2008

I stayed here one night as part of an educational for my job as a travel agent.

This is a hotel spread out over a hillside overlooking Port Refuge.

The reception/public areas are clean and tidy, with tiled floors and plenty of room. There is a pool area and a reasonably large pool that looked a little over chlorinated as the water was not clear. We did see some children swimming in it so the water can't be too bad.

The rooms however are very 70s in decor from carpet to furniture.

Pluses are that they are huge with a couch and easy chair to sit in and my harbourview room had an amazing view over the harbour. There was plenty of room to spread out my luggage on a built in shelf at the right height. The air conditioning was fantastic and went all night. There was also a fridge and tea/coffee making facilities. The bed was also comfortable and there was plenty of lighting in the room. The bathroom was clean and tidy although again very 70s in decor. The room interconnected with the one next door and as one of my travelling companions was in the next room I also discovered that it interconnected with a third room making it fantastic for groups travelling together or for families.

The only major minus was that there are no fly screens so you can't sit inside with the sliding door open. taking in the view.

We also drank at the bar and ate in the restaurant for dinner and breakfast. Bar prices were typical of all Pacific Island resorts - on the higher side - and the range was quite good. The food in the restaurant was superb the fish and the lobster were the best.

The resort offers free transfers to and from the airport which is great and is about a 15 minute walk to the towncentre.

I loved Tonga and will go back again but if you are expecting somewhere like Fiji please lower your expectations. This is Fiji as it was 20 odd years ago before the big resorts tookover and is probably as close as you will get to a true Pacific Island experience. Church on a Sunday is a must, we were lucky enough to be taken to the Catholic Church in Neiafu and the singing is wonderful and I have never seen such well-behaved children in church.
