“Wouldn't go back”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 September 2008

We stayed there for 1 night in late August 2008. Overall we didnt think it was worth the money and would not want to go back.

The positivies were:
The airport shuttles were included, Breakfast was included (although it was not very nice) and the view from the Harbour view room was fantastic.

The negatives were:
It was overpriced, the air conditioning was way too loud so couldnt sleep with it on which meant we still couldnt sleep cos it was too hot, the pool (which is what attracted us to book there) was a funny colour and you couldnt see the bottom so we swam at the jetty instead and the phone didnt work.

We werent expecting much but we felt like the quality you get here is the same as cheaper places so why pay the extra?

“139.5 USD and no hot water in room”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 August 2008

We hadn't hot water in room in spite of two plumbs interventions. The Hotel didn't want to refund something and told us that the bus to airport would be free specially for us. But the airport transfers is complementary for all customers.
Thank you for the lied deal.

“Huge room and great view”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 July 2008

I stayed here one night as part of an educational for my job as a travel agent.

This is a hotel spread out over a hillside overlooking Port Refuge.

The reception/public areas are clean and tidy, with tiled floors and plenty of room. There is a pool area and a reasonably large pool that looked a little over chlorinated as the water was not clear. We did see some children swimming in it so the water can't be too bad.

The rooms however are very 70s in decor from carpet to furniture.

Pluses are that they are huge with a couch and easy chair to sit in and my harbourview room had an amazing view over the harbour. There was plenty of room to spread out my luggage on a built in shelf at the right height. The air conditioning was fantastic and went all night. There was also a fridge and tea/coffee making facilities. The bed was also comfortable and there was plenty of lighting in the room. The bathroom was clean and tidy although again very 70s in decor. The room interconnected with the one next door and as one of my travelling companions was in the next room I also discovered that it interconnected with a third room making it fantastic for groups travelling together or for families.

The only major minus was that there are no fly screens so you can't sit inside with the sliding door open. taking in the view.

We also drank at the bar and ate in the restaurant for dinner and breakfast. Bar prices were typical of all Pacific Island resorts - on the higher side - and the range was quite good. The food in the restaurant was superb the fish and the lobster were the best.

The resort offers free transfers to and from the airport which is great and is about a 15 minute walk to the towncentre.

I loved Tonga and will go back again but if you are expecting somewhere like Fiji please lower your expectations. This is Fiji as it was 20 odd years ago before the big resorts tookover and is probably as close as you will get to a true Pacific Island experience. Church on a Sunday is a must, we were lucky enough to be taken to the Catholic Church in Neiafu and the singing is wonderful and I have never seen such well-behaved children in church.

“This hotel salvaged our trip!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 June 2008

This is a great hotel. It shows the signs of aging but the location, view and staff are wonderful. We checked out of the hotel we had originally booked in once a taxi driver told us about this place. The Fijian chefs here were great. This place is what Tonga is all about. We were told they are going to be doing a six month renovation. We definitely would like to return when finished. Keep up the goo work!

“Can I Go Home Now?”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 March 2008

My husband and I needed a place to stay for two nights before our sailing charter began. At the advice of the charter company, we checked into the Paradise Hotel, "the nicest hotel in town".

"Nice" is all relative. Our first room was covered in termite droppings. I'm talking about a thick layer on all surfaces. We were moved into a different room that had less of a termite infestation problem, but was in no way an upgrade. The mattress pre-dated the Korean War. We were unable to sleep in the bed together as the force of one of us rolling over (I weigh 125 lbs.) would catapult the other onto the floor. Leaky plumbing, crusty carpeting, etc.

I'm convinced this hotel was a beautiful place once upon a time, but four decades of virtually no upkeep has left the place in sad shape.

I'm not sure there are any other options in town, but at the very least, dial down your expectations.
