“Hosts combined with location make this a top choice among four resorts I visited in Vava'u.”

While most resorts on the Vava'u islands of Tonga share tranquil beauty and white sand beaches, Ika Lahi trumps with its location at a large, calm lagoon on outlying Hunga Island. Also, although service and hospitality are great at the four resorts I visited, Caroline and Steve at Ika Lahi go an extra nautical mile.
I am not a deep sea fisherman but appreciate Steve's enthusiasm for the sport--and the fruits of his outings, which grace guests' tables. He is very knowledgeable about sea creatures , shows deep concern for conservation, and adopts ethical catch-and-release practices with marlin.
Of Caroline, I must say she is a many-faceted jewel. She takes all anxiety out of meeting airline connections and making contact with whale-watching/swimming and other excursions. She anticipates needs and makes phone arrangements--a blessing especially for northern hemisphere folk whose cell phones are inoperative in Tonga. Both she and Steve provide transport to and from the lodge with their several boats. Last but most of all, Caroline is a n inventive chef with an international menu to rival the best eclectic restaurants I have experienced. Catch of the day may be mahimahi simple with a side of salsa, or Thai style with coconut cream, or curried Indian style. Salads and fruit-based desserts are culled from her garden or other local sources. A highlight was panna cotta flavored with tart mandarins. As a one-helper chef, Caroline offers an amazing variety of dishes: when I was there, three choices for appetizer, main course, and dessert. She is fun (and funny) to chat with. Ask her about some of the neglected pets she has saved. Everyone will luxuriate in the tropical splendor at Ika Lahi, but I recommend it especially to the compassionate, conservationist, and connoisseur of fine fusion food.

what great hosts, superb constructions from the Kitchen are a highlight of staying with this lovely couple in their private resort on a beautiful enclosed Island lagoon.
Safe swimming and snorkeling right in front and absolutely stunning fishing on the drop of right at the entrance to the lagoon.
A day out with Steve is not to be missed, he's a great bloke and an excellent fishing operator. In one day we caught 2 Mahi Mahi 2 marlin and a yellowfin Tuna!!!!Stunning!
Ask caroline for some of her special scones, they're superb!
Very clean and comfortable modern accomodation with good showers which are hard to find in Tonga!

“Island Paradise- Beautiful, Peaceful, plus FISHING”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 November 2009

We were traveling with our two young children (5 and 2 yrs) for the 1st time out of the U.S. to meet with their grandparents that had moved to Asia. Caroline & Steve were wonderful hosts. Caroline was so friendly and accommodating (making PB & Js any time of the day) that our 5 year old wanted to call her repeatedly upon on return home. Also, the stress of adhering to a restricted diet while traveling was not an issue at Ika Lahi- Caroline handled everything with knowledge and patience. The dining area was impressive with the shell collection and wooden interior. To say the food was excellent does not truly do it justice.

Our rooms were clean, quiet, and comfortable with beautiful views looking over the water.

We had the lagoon to ourselves to play in the sand, kayak, swim, and snorkel. We could see whales from the lookout above the resort. The fishing was good, with marlin, mahi mahi, dog- tooth tuna, and wahoo, among others, brought to the boat. Steve was an entertaining captain on the fishing trips. The scuba diving in the area was most impressive - that was my only regret of the entire trip- I wished we'd scheduled an extra day to enjoy the bountiful coral and fish in the area.

If a quiet, remote beach destination is what one is looking for, I cannot imagine a better location. This lodge deserves a vibrant, glowing review- not sure that I truly expressed the beauty and SERENTY of the place.

Our son, now 8, still refers to it as Island Paradise and wants to know when we can go back!! It is definitely a place I would like to visit again.

“Heavenly!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 March 2009

Ika Lahi was just heavenly! The setting is to die for, relaxing, stunningly beautiful and remote . The resort is lovely as well, clean, comfortable, beautiful, just perfect for a relaxing vacation! The lodge offered a variety of activities also for sport and leisure. Ika Lahi is the best resort I've experienced in all of Vava'u where I lived and explored for two years. My partner and I loved our entire time there, hated to ever leave.
Caroline is the best hostess, warm, inviting, the most incredible cook ever. This place offered it all for me. I couldn't have asked for anything more!

“Game Fish Mecca”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 December 2008

My Wife first Booked a Fishing Holiday here, 5 Years ago for my Birthday, I went with 3 other friends, I was Blown away with the Place, Friendly People, The Quality of the Lodge , the Food and Most of all the Fishing. I have been back each year for the past 4 years each time with more and more friends,. This year was the 5 anniversary and it didnt fail to deliver. 9 Friends had 5 days of superb weather, Great Accomodation and a lot of fish. Each year we always have a couple of first timers. On every occassion we have landed there First Marlin. The Lodge run by Steve and Caroline is World Class. No one in 5 years has ever complained about Food, Fishing or the Location. We are again pencilled in for 2009 for a group of 12 Anglers. This place is hard to beat on a World class stage. Highly Recommended
