“Wanted to stay longer...”

My Sister and I stayed at the Arekuna Lodge in early November and I can't praise the place highly enough. It's beautifully located high on the banks of the Caroni River giving you fantastic panoramic views, I find it hard to understand why so few Brits want to visit.

On your way in you'll quickly realise this place is only reachable by air and my what a landing you're in for, our guide told us to get ready for an interesting landing and we weren't disappointed! I guess the most accurate way to describe the runway would be how you'd imagine landing in the Australian Outback, it was brilliant!

The camp itself is very eco friendly, they use solar panels to generate enough power for lighting from 6pm - 10.30pm, after that it's movement by torchlight only :) They also use a neat condensation trick to purify the river water so it can be safely drunk (tasted better than bottled mineral water).

The rooms are completely open air, which is delightful since it's pretty hot and humid there; but have no fear, every inch is meshed in to stop the mossies attacking. Our room had three beds and a hammock across the room, the hammock was soooooo relaxing, you want to fall asleep the moment you lie back in it. Just a word of warning though, there is only cold water at the camp, which means a cold shower - honestly, it's really very refreshing.

The food at Arekuna was exceptional, or at least I liked it. I guess if you have dietary requirements or are vegetarian you might struggle, as there's no choice to the three course meal provided, just what is served to your table. We decided not to drink any alcohol whist at the camp as it was priced quite high, some people complained about this, but forget that alcohol is a luxury there and has to be flown in especially.

If you like waterfalls, then you won't be disappointed by Las Babas, they're fabulous and very refreshing should you choose to take a dip.

We were lucky enough to view a magnificent sunset and then later watched the stars and planets, they were so bright and clear as there were no lights or pollution to spoil the night sky.

Just one small thing to mention, the camp has quite steep paths up to the restaurant, so if you have difficulties walking, this might not be the trip for you.

“Peace - an idyllic place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 April 2008

The only way in to this secluded and isolated place is by plane. Cessna or 12 seaters bring pre booked groups to this heaven.

The rooms are built of stone with natural roofs. At first sight they are open in the roof area but cleverly sealed with mosquito netting. Creating a feeling of being in the open without the nuisance of mosquitos.

The beds are stone, topped with a comfy mattress. There is a hammock for resting too. The bathroom is basic with only cold water and there is only electricity in the room from 5pm - 10.30 as it relies on solar energy.

Meals are taken in the restaurant at the top of the hill overlooking the Caroni River with stunning views. Non alcoholic drinks are included in cost and freely available. The food was good.

The whole place was so tranquil and one could forgive the very basic accomodation for the views and the opportunities to explore this region further.

“Nightjars”

Stayed here for one night on Lost World tour. excellent flight in (if a bit bumpy) on landing and good views of Angel Falls en route.
Parrots at dawn in trees around camp and saw Little Chacalaca, Cara Cara etc. At night nightjars came within touching distance as they took insects attracted to torch light.
Went to Indian camp downriver and saw a snake catch a frog.
Had a fish in river and caught Tetras but somewhat bigger than those in fish tanks at home!
I enjoyed it and would have liked to spend longer.

  • Liked — Wildlife all around
  • Disliked — Long walk uphill to restaurant (but then you had a great view!!)

“An amazing experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 July 2006

My daughter, two grandchildren and I spent three days at the Arekuna Lodge. We flew in a 12 seater plane and landed on a tiny runway (amazing). We were not prepared for what we were about to experience. To get to the waterfalls, one must take a boatride down the Caroni River and its various tributaries. Our boatman was highly skilled and familiar with every nook and cranny of the river. It was the rainy season so the river was high and the water covered up all of the islands in the river. We went down some rapids and generally had an amazing ride.

THEN, the boat docks and we went went on a 3 mile trek through the jungle, about an hour or two of walking up and down a rocky, slippery, path, through marshes, over savannah. It was not for sissies. Also, our guide, Luis Moreno, likes to go FAST. It was about 85 degrees and humid. HOT, but not extremely hot. It is a good idea to wear long sleeves and long pants to protect yourself from the sun, the bugs, and the folage but not everyone did. We also wore bathing suits so that we could swim in the Falls.

The Lodge itself is lovely and overlooks the Caroni River. The food was good and the service pleasant. I highly recommend this trip to adventurous people in good physical condition who are willing to rough it.

The electricity comes from solar panels and is only available from 5 to 11 p.m. There is water but no hot water but the cool shower that I had after returning from the first day's march was heavenly.

The other highlight was the visit to the Indian village (really a camp) where a family of about 15-20 people live without running water, indoor plumbing or electricity. We bought beautiful jewelry at a very low price. They keep birds as pets. The feathers are clipped so they don't fly away and they live freely in their camp.

  • Liked — A bird had built a nest in our cabana
  • Disliked — Lights out after 11 p.m. and a rugged climb up and down from the cabanas
  • Tips/Secrets — bring bug spray, sun screen, long sleeves and pants (but summer variety) and prepare for a lot of walking. GOOD SHOES are a must.
