My Sister and I stayed at the Arekuna Lodge in early November and I can't praise the place highly enough. It's beautifully located high on the banks of the Caroni River giving you fantastic panoramic views, I find it hard to understand why so few Brits want to visit.
On your way in you'll quickly realise this place is only reachable by air and my what a landing you're in for, our guide told us to get ready for an interesting landing and we weren't disappointed! I guess the most accurate way to describe the runway would be how you'd imagine landing in the Australian Outback, it was brilliant!
The camp itself is very eco friendly, they use solar panels to generate enough power for lighting from 6pm - 10.30pm, after that it's movement by torchlight only :) They also use a neat condensation trick to purify the river water so it can be safely drunk (tasted better than bottled mineral water).
The rooms are completely open air, which is delightful since it's pretty hot and humid there; but have no fear, every inch is meshed in to stop the mossies attacking. Our room had three beds and a hammock across the room, the hammock was soooooo relaxing, you want to fall asleep the moment you lie back in it. Just a word of warning though, there is only cold water at the camp, which means a cold shower - honestly, it's really very refreshing.
The food at Arekuna was exceptional, or at least I liked it. I guess if you have dietary requirements or are vegetarian you might struggle, as there's no choice to the three course meal provided, just what is served to your table. We decided not to drink any alcohol whist at the camp as it was priced quite high, some people complained about this, but forget that alcohol is a luxury there and has to be flown in especially.
If you like waterfalls, then you won't be disappointed by Las Babas, they're fabulous and very refreshing should you choose to take a dip.
We were lucky enough to view a magnificent sunset and then later watched the stars and planets, they were so bright and clear as there were no lights or pollution to spoil the night sky.
Just one small thing to mention, the camp has quite steep paths up to the restaurant, so if you have difficulties walking, this might not be the trip for you.
