“high adventure!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 September 2010

easily the best option for the soft adventure travel experience of angel falls. Unlike so many south american must sees like MP and Iguazzu falls, the worlds tallest falls are still VERY hard to get to. Several lodging options OK for back packing 20 somethings but for adventurous families better to splash the cash and go with Waku. So it's 2 small plane journeys from caracas and then 5 hours from canaima by motorised dug out canoe and then a hard 2 hour jungle trek! we were rewarded with perfect visibility when there which is far from the norm -the site is truly exhillarating.
waku is excellent, location unsurpassed and the food and service was good.it is expensive but you will probably only go there once so stay there for 4 days so as to do everything.walking behind sapo falls was as exciting and dangerous as i would feel happy for the family to risk, flying over AF just the 4 of us and the pilot was very exciting and the overnight hammock camping for the 2 day AF trip was a lot more comfortable than we,d feared.
Go there expecting a lodge that compares with a 3* normal hotel, be VERY disciplined with bug repellant and like us you may remember your visit as truly a once in a lifetime adventure in the lost world

“No problemo = Not my problem”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 September 2010

Lovely campus, almost no people, Buchannans scotch rocks is $17, mixer is another $4-5. Rates include full board, a twin room with hammock at the porch, shower, orange-brown faucet water (and 2 mini bottles of water per day), 3 hangers, 2 main dishes per meal (usually covered in onions and/or tomatoes.) and charter flights from and to the nearest airport Pureto Ordaz (on the Orinoco River). I couldn´t get any information on rates here, they say it is all done elsewhere and they have no idea. My mainland tour agent booked through a Caracas agent who booked with Canaima Tours which apparently has something to do with both the Waku Lodge (employees wear Canaima Tours shirts) and the charter airline, Trasmandu, has a Canaima Tours sign at their Puerto Ordaz airport desk. The information booth said they were the same thing. Having so many different names for things allows everybody to point the finger elsewhere when ever problems arise. I paid $2828.00 for 2 nights in Caracas, airfare Caracas to Puerto Ordaz, 3 nights at Waku Lodge, $150 flightseeing of the Falls and transfers between hotel and airport. The lodge was around $560 per night in the original offer, but I never got a final itemized statement of costs.

“Rustic, but in beautiful surroundings”

This is a "Lodge", so rooms are little cabins, do have A/C, no TV or phones. Small baths. But it really doesn't matter. You aren't in the room that much. We'd asked for ones facing the lagoon and the falls there, but you really don't get much chance to look at them, so it didn't matter that much. Packages usually include meals and tours. Meals are good. Sapo Falls is amazing!! It's a two hour afternoon tour, We went to see Angel Falls, but the Sapo Falls excursion was great! Long day to go to Angel Falls, up at 4 a.m home at 6-7 pm. You get wet and you get bites! Key to trip is being prepared. Water proof stuff for camera and changes of clothes. Better yet, a water proof camera. Lots of bug repellent, and long sleeves and pants. Lots of hiking at falls so good hiking shoes to wear a must, but only want water shoes on ride up in boat, as everything gets wet.Trip to Angel Falls is mainly getting there and hiking up and getting back. Pretty rigorous, so don't try if you are not in reasonable shape. I was disappointed by not getting chance to take more photos. I wanted pictures, but most of the others on our boat trip, just wanted to see the Falls. Frank the manager of Waku Lodge speaks perfect English (his mother was British). He is somewhat of a rigid personality, but did help us more than once in fixing reservations, changing flights etc. He runs a tight ship.

“Amazing!”

We had the pleasure of spending two days at the Waku Lodge in beautiful Canaima, Venezuela. The rooms were wonderful - very spacious and clean with air conditoning (although with the breezes, it really wasn't necessary). The food and service were excellent. We had a great hike and boat ride around the beautiful waterfalls. What a great place!

“The most amazing location on Earth”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 October 2009

My wife and I stayed at Waku Lodge in October 2007 for 3 nights whilst touring around Venezuela. Words really cannot begin to do justice to Waku Lodge. The best I can come up with is to stay that if you were to stay at one hotel before you die it should be this one.The hotel itslef is very good (probably the best quality place we stayed at on our tour), but it's location is simply awe inspiring. Situated on the banks of a large lagoon, Waku Lodge is on one side, with huge roaring waterfalls stretching across the other side and views of huge tepuis lying in the distance. This was easily the most amazing location either of us had stayed at. A Swedish family who we'd met and who put our travelling experience to shame agreed that they had never stayed anywhere quite so spectacular.

The hotel accommodation itself was pretty good and was far better than we had expected. Our room was cosy, although quite gloomy and with a small shower room.. As I said, though, it was much better than we had expected. Outside each room was a lovely large hammock - big enough for the two of us - which was great to relax in, whilst listening to the roar of the waterfalls in the distance. One disappointment was that it seemd that we couldn't be trusted with the controls for our air conditioning - we had to ask Reception to come and turn the air con up or down as appropriate.

The standard of service was good, but at times a little regimental. The manager / assistance manager - Frank - was generally polite and efficient, but at times seemed somewhat dictatorial in his approach to his guests. We were told off one morning for apparantly being late for a tour. "Late" in this respect seemed to mean "not early" when, in fact, we were bang on time. Our tour guids also varied immensely. On the day that we arrived we walked to Sapo Falls, where our guide - a short dumpy woman - acted more like a prison guard than a guide. On the second day, we travelled by boat to the base of Angel Falls, where our guide Jo / Jose was simply superb. A former catwalk model - he was a great laugh and had some great stories about his time modelling around Europe and generally blowing his money on anything that came to mind at the time. He was both knowledgeable and accommodating, though and, if he's still there, I'd recommend you try and fit in with his tour rota.

Would we go back to Waku Lodge? Without hesitation and we would happly have stayed there for several days longer than we did.
