I had booked a VIP room through the hotel's website. You actually get the impression that the credit card details are only required to secure the booking, but the amount is debited upon making the reservation. When we tried to check in with the print-out, it took the receptionists (at a given moment, there were four of them) 20 minutes to retrieve the booking and to give us the room key.
The VIP room we had was huge, with a big flat screen TV which was not working as an unplugged cable had vanished behind the desk. A handyman fixed it in no time, yet I wonder why nobody checks the equipment before the guests arrive.
After a good night of sleep in a comfy bed, we were woken up at 8 a.m. by the maid who handed out the local newspaper we had never asked for. As she was there, I asked for some toilet paper, but it only materialized after I called the front desk an hour later. Is it too much to request from a top hotel to provide a spare roll in the bathroom?
As previous posters wrote, breakfast is substandard, front desk staff are moderately helpful and very moderately multilingual. As the booking confirmation stated that the use of the swimming pool was included, I asked were it was - just to be told that the hotel did not have any and that this feature probably related to their property on Isla Margerida!
On the positive side, there are two things: the safe neighbourhood and the excellent, typical marisqeria (seafood restaurant) just across the street!
In the unlikely event that I had to travel to Caracas again, I would definitely choose a different hotel.
