We stayed in this hotel from March 5-8 2009 and had a wonderful time. But hence, there are a few things you must try to remember in order to have a great vacation:
1) You are in a third-world country. I'm from Venezuela myself, so I was not "shocked" when arriving in Playa El Yaque (Margarita Island) and finding myself carrying my luggage (note: take luggage and/or bags that are easy to carry) from their reception center to the small marina where the boat to the hotel is. The boat that takes you to Coche Island is old, basic, no frills...but clean and reliable. We had no problems with our luggage to/from Coche island..we took one large luggage for the 2 of us and it didn't get wet or anything. Just try to watch out where your stuff is being placed and this should do it.
2) You cannot expect EVERYONE to speak English...locals may have "basic" language skills and are friendly enough to try to understand what you want in spite of language barriers. For us, it was sad to see that they have an activities desk in the lobby...with ABSOLUTELY NO INFORMATION in English or SPANISH...only German and Dutch!! Before checking out we pointed this out to the staff. So, in other words, this hotel caters more towards European travelers than locals/English-speaking tourists. We have traveled all over the world, lived overseas, and seen wonderful places...so we make an effort to try to be comfortable in our own country and will always speak to hotel staff and make suggestions when we feel anyone visiting Venezuela may not enjoy their stay.
3) The population of Coche Island is under 10,000. There are no highways, shopping centers, recreational areas (other than the beach and a few excursions to explore this small, dry island), discos/nightclubs, Mc Donald's, Senor Frogg's, Hard Rock Cafes, etc. So be careful regarding your true expectations before choosing Coche as your destination .
4) When you travel abroad, you must learn to adapt to local food and customs. Of course, hotels will do their best in accommodating guests from all over the world, but you cannot expect to have "Wheaties" for breakfast here. You will find a wide selection in all buffets but be open-minded when it comes to food.
5) A 4-star hotel, according to Venezuelan tourism standards, may be a 2.5-3-star hotel in other countries.
After having said this, I can only tell you we had a great time! You will even find it more relaxing if you are willing to sacrifice your blackberry and similar gadgets during your stay and just soak up the sun in the quiet beach and the best pool available in Coche. Staff was friendly and our room was spacious, with a nice king-sized bed and a wonderful, cool split A/C. The bathroom was a new experience: the sink is in the room, there is a separate area with a door for the W/C, and the shower is next to the room and has no roof (take a look at my pics). Thant's right, as you'll read in other reviews...while you are showering, you will be outside and not inside your room. Only if someone is creepy enough to jump over 7 feet will you have anything to worry about. Theoretically you could jump into any room's shower area and from there open the shower door and literally walk inside their room...so just watch out for your personal belongings just in case! We are "used" to the Venezuelan high crime rate...but fortunately this is one of the places in Venezuela where this is virtually impossible. There's a safe inside the room (staff must come in and activate it, which never happened in our case although we requested the service...so we just kept important stuff inside our luggage and put a lock on the zipper and had no problems). Our room was clean, the shower door a bit moldy on the outside...but otherwise very well-kept. As for food, we found the buffet restaurant very good and plentiful. For breakfast you'll find a wide variety of fruit, juices, breads/muffins, an omelet station, cold cuts, arepas (a local favorite for breakfast), meat, chicken, and even fish (all these go well with arepas!). For lunch and dinner there were plenty of options and great soups and salads. Yes, you may find a pasta station every night, but if you have pasta one night, you may just concentrate on eating something different the next night and have nothing to complain about (some people have stated that there were always the same options every night, but this depends on what you want to eat each day! Remember this is the only buffet restaurant included in the price, and you can always eat at their other restaurant which is a bit pricey but you may find the extra cost is worth it. We didn't try it but it appears to be quite good according to friends there).
Coche Island is famous for windsurfing and kitesurfing so you may find it windy at times (great for these sports). But the beach itself is calm and the water is very still...you may be relaxing in your beach chair and only see a few waves per minute, and will find none to be over a foot tall. There are several watersports you can try at an extra cost: banana boats, jet-skis, etc. We basically relaxed near the beach and at the pool during our entire stay and found the bean bags they have on the beach to be very relaxing while sipping pina coladas and contemplating clear, starry skies.
I would definitely returing to this wonderful hotel and would recommend it to any friend.
